ok i have a 15 gall community aquarium, and i java fern, green cabomba and anubias plants in the aquarium i was considering a carpet type plant like java moss or something similar for the foreground, are they easy to care for, as i dont want it taking up to much space around the tank and does lots of food get trapped underneath it? i though it would be a good idea for my cory cats and other bottom dwelling creatures to have.
Java fern questions,?
I have two large ones I grew from very small plants they are easy care and 6 hours light,no problem.Don't worry about the food the corys will get it.Enjoy your natural fish habitat.
Reply:Neither Java Fern or Java Moss will do well on the gravel. They both attach themselves to rocks or driftwood. If you bury the rhizome (root-like growth) of Java Fern it will just die back. Either of these plants should be very gently attached to its growing medium. Both will do OK in low light. If they become attached to a good medium they will require trimming in about a year.
Reply:java moss is very easy to care for -- but it doesn't grow well for what you want it to do. it grows in odd shaped drifts and to keep it a flat mat you would need professional scissors to trim it -- they cost a small fortune. you are better off attaching it to something you can pull out. java moss needs to be cut back fairly frequently -- you trim it like you were giving someone a haircut.
Reply:It'd be a good idea, and I wouldn't worry about food getting trapped, many plants tend to use the food for nutrients, if you get worried about it, plant them in a thicker gravel or glass rocks for easy removal so you can clean. Most javaferns/moss are very easy to carefore. Hope it turns out nicely!
