In the red fern grows, how does billy catch his first coon?

~*KIMMIE*~....

Check in chapters 7 or 8. Billy's grandfather teaches him to make a trap into which he places a bright shiny object and some nails at an angle. For several days it doesn't work, no coon, but when the human scent finally wears off, he catches one! (the coon reaches in for the shiny object and when he tries to hold the object AND lift his paw out, it is caught on the nails.)

hope that helps!!! :-)

"Mosses are one of the first land plants.Which adaptations allowed them to live outside water?"?
Similar to the first answer, mosses do not live out of water, they only thrive in moist, shady conditions. If this conditions change, the moss dies eventually.

Ferns again, one of the first real plants, and very simple in their make up. They spread by spores, not seeds which may add to their prevalence.

Maybe it's because not only do moss have to

How can I keep my boston ferns green?

this is a potted plant

How can I keep my boston ferns green?
If the fern is in your house, try giving it a little vacation outside for the summer. It will need a shady place, like a covered porch or patio. Sometimes the fresh outside air works wonders for a plant that's been inside for months. Make sure it is well-watered but not soggy. You might need to repot it into a larger pot if it is rootbound or you find the soil dries out too quickly. Give it a diluted fertilizer; sometimes I find that feeding every week with a very dilute liquid plant food (plenty of nitrogen) works better than a stronger solution less often. Mist the leaves, especially if you live in a dry area. I live north of San Francisco, and I have potted ferns on my porch. When we have our usual morning fog, my ferns don't need additional misting, but in our recent heatwave, they've needed a bit of help.
Reply:I've not had much success with boston ferns because they like very moist conditions to grow in, and my homes were dry, especially in the winter.

So the solution is they must be misted with a fine spray couple times a day. Careful about overwatering. They like moist, warm conditions.
Reply:Boston ferns can actually be a little on the fussy side. In the summer, they like a shady location and planty of water. They also like to be misted with a spray bottle of water daily. In the winter, move them to a bright. indirect light location. ( keep misting ....) Also, don't forget to fertilize with a basic fertilizer. They love it!
Reply:water the fern daily, especially if it is outside. Ferns also like shade.

We just found out they are going to tent our apt for termites...can we leave any of our plants?

We just found out they are going to tent our apt for termites...can we leave any of our plants?
Yes you can leave your plants. Sounds like you have a drywood termite problem in your building. As far as I know, there are really no pesticides that kill plants as they are designed to affect the biology of the insect.
Reply:Yep, actually it's good for the plants. Will kill any bugs in them too.

What can I grow under high acid fir/cedar trees?

What I know I don't want are ferns (i live in the NW, we have plenty) or an invasive vine or any kind of ground cover that spreads out of control...or for that matter, bamboo. Ideally I'm looking for perennials that add color. multiple suggestions that I can place together would be great. Thanks

What can I grow under high acid fir/cedar trees?
Hostas thrive about anywhere and hydrangeas would work - the acidity in the soil will determine what color they come out.
Reply:Azaleas, rhododendrons (they want some sun, however). Be careful of the tree's root system, however.

What kind of weather are ferns good to plant in? Are they an all year plant?

Living in S.C. my ferns do die out in winter, they like shade, mine are in sun so I have to water them every other day, they require it. Come spring they jump right back to life. Pretty much any climate that is not to cold and ferns will thrive...

What kind of weather are ferns good to plant in? Are they an all year plant?
Ferns are year round plants. They are also shade loving plants so dont plant them in direct sunlight. If you plant them before a rain then maybe you wont have to water them. They like humidity also so if you are having a dry spell you can mist them to give the humidity they need.

How many watts for a 55 gallon for java fern and gava moss?

hi i have a 55 gallon tank with two floresent light bulbs side by side one is a power-glow and the other is some weird brand but would java fern or java moss grow in that. I dont want to get a new light set up or any of that stuff buy i would get new bulds (18in) or what kind of floresent bulbs would work? and if your going to tell me that i need a new hole set up dont bother!

How many watts for a 55 gallon for java fern and gava moss?
java moss and java fern grow easily in most light just get some fluresent tube lights and run them for a hour a day and your plants will be fine
Reply:Java moss and fern are pretty low light plants. They will grow OK under almost any sort of light.

Just get some and try it out. Run the lights for 10-12 hours a day and those plants should grow fine.

Ian
Reply:With those two plants, you can pretty much choose your lights based on how they make things look to you in the tank - they are definitely not picky about light.

When you do go to replace your bulbs, I would suggest that you broaden your search pattern a bit.... Don't confine yourself to looking in pet stores. You can get daylight fluorescent bulbs dirt cheap at place like Home Depot. All you need to do is get the right length and diameter. (Easy task there, they only come in a few different diameters)

I prefer to keep the lights on 12 hours a day, but you really don't have to. I had tossed some Java Moss in a half filled 10g tank on the floor when I was tearing down a tank, and I forgot about it. There was no light on the tank and the room was unused so the only light was what came in thru the window with the blinds closed. I was pretty surprised when I saw that after a month the moss had kept growing.

You've chosen probably the best plants possible, IMHO, for a low light, no hassle tank.

Just remember - don't bury the rhizome (thick part that the leaves come off of) of the Fern - they *hate* that. :)

If you decide to add more plants later, here is a list of plants that will thrive in low light: http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_list...

Why is it people love side bets here in the US?
After you leave Illinois, (if you still have any cash - no checks please) the next state west is Missouri. Missouri is called "The Show Me" state. Throw your brag around all you want but you'll have to show us here in mighty Mo.

By the way Julia and Rhonda said they're ready. In fact Suki Cooper wants a call when you're in town. We call this South Korean warrior Samurai Suki around here. She slices and dices her opponents into itty-bitty pieces.

Write it down - Cue %26amp; Cushion, Overland, St. Louis County.

Hey Johnny, I know $100 isn't much but if you want to lay off half let me know. He may not have any travelling money left after leaving Illinois and Missouri.

will interest the player, he may even throw the game, as long as he makes money on the game.

It is unfortunate, but not really, that pool is about winning money, and not winning the game.

you went to some town in Kentucky, and now you think you are going to illinois, and kick some butt?.

All I can say is good luck my friend as you will need it.

Go and play In Chicago, go play some one pocket, even your games of 8 and 9, and you will gain some experience. You will say well, at least I learned some things, and everything is not lost. But yes go in there cocky, they will love You there.

I do have to tell you, a word of good advice, and that is, make sure of your surroundings, before you start opening your mouth, or start winning, and when you come back, let us Know How you did, I wish you Health and Luck.
Reply:side betting lets the nobodys and knits that hang around pool halls today get in the action. its real big around here to have more money bet on the side, than the actual game itself. Sounds odd coming from TheFLowerLady, but can a LeatherLeaf Fern grow well indoors?

I bought a sickly one on clearance ($2) and now it is huge and healthy on my front porch, in it's original 1-gallon plastic pot. Problem is, we get gale-force winds (50mph+ on a GOOD day) and they are unbelievably dry. We're scheduled for them to start this afternoon/evening. I want to bring my fern in so it doesn't dry out or blow away but need to know what it will need to remain healthy indoors. Thanx.

Sounds odd coming from TheFLowerLady, but can a LeatherLeaf Fern grow well indoors?
It will need to be in an area that gets light. Also spritz with water at least once a week with tepid water.Don't let it dry out. Also don't let leaves touch furniture etc.If you can buy a fern stand.

How do I keep birds from building nests in my hanging ferns?

The "green friendly" way is to simply check the baskets for nesting materials and remove them by hand. Eventually, the birds give up. You may also try small shiny pinwheels in the planters that move in the breeze and frighten the birds. It also looks festive. I have had this problem before, it is a nuisance.

How do I keep birds from building nests in my hanging ferns?
I happen to be a bird lover and love the fact that birds procreate. It's part of nature! I, myself, would welcome the little family of birds!

But, since you asked, I suppose you could construct some sort of scarecrow and place it in the yard, or hang an owl figure in the hanging fern, if that's possible. That would be the humane way to go.

I am sure, even before I glance, that someone on this site is going to tell you to shoot the birds. But I would not only not suggest this, but say shame on you to the inhumane people that find laughter in someone's serious question.
Reply:Spray them with 7 dust.
Reply:I was told to use moth balls. After a few waterings, they will disappear.

It worked for me.
Reply:Probably can't . If it bothers you, just keep removing nest material . I've had birds nest in hanging plants several times , %26amp; it never hurt the plant . They never stayed for more than 4-5 weeks , so is only temporary . Some birds are very particular , as to elevation of their nest . You could try changing the height of the basket. Not likely to work, but might .

TX Cowboy , "Spray it with sevin"??????

*rolls eyes in a "Lord help me." moment*

Where to start?

1) Sevin is an insecticide , so not meant for birds . - %26amp; they won't know it's toxic %26amp; get the message that they're supposed to move . ;D

2) Poisoning birds is generally not a good thing,( %26amp; won't get you points for good advice )

3) The fern is probably coming back into the house when summer's over . Sevin probably never going to make anybody's list of "Household Items You Can't Live Without "

4) The white dust all over it, might detract from the fern's ornamental value ..... Maybe.

5) Sevin isn't the cure-all, be-all-end-all , alpha %26amp; omega, solver of all the world's problems . (That several people I know think it is ;D) Just use it for it's intended purposes.(as labeled)

What are "r" controlled vowels? And do the following words acceptable? fern, dinner, herd, prefect.

"R controlled vowels" are those that are followed by an "r" and do not make their regular short or long sound.

ar (park), er (certain), ir (circle), or (more), and ur (turn) and sometimes yr (like zephyr) are all of them.

All of your words have "r" controlled vowels except prefect.

Is it ok for a cat to eat a frilly fern? I have no access to grass for the cat to get its usual greens.?

My indoor cat likes eating grass and rose leaves, so I usually kept a container of cat grass for him to snack on when the need arose. Now I have no access to those products but experimented with Garfield's favorite - a fern. Before he seldom up-chucked but he seems to upchuck everytime after a nibble on the fern - what other plants can I use that will seem tasty to the cat but not induce such a dramatic effect. I have tried all kinds of herbs including fennel and garlic flowers but they do not appeal to my pampered feline.

Is it ok for a cat to eat a frilly fern? I have no access to grass for the cat to get its usual greens.?
my cat goes for shrubby type plants rather than grass...think its called a "heeby" shrub.
Reply:Why a fern?

Barley grass is ideal. Just put a few barley seeds in a pot with soil in it, and water it regularly and it will grow nice grass for your cat to eat. Fern might even be toxic to cats.
Reply:I bought a tray of grass seeds, all you need to do is add water and after 3 days, the grass has started to grow. Once it gets to 5cms I think you can let them eat it. I bought mine from www.zooplus.co.uk - it was about £1.50 for a tray.
Reply:cats only eat grass if they want to be sick if your cat is eating frilly fern the cat will know if it is alright to eat frilly fern
Reply:Have you tried growing catnip?
Reply:Why don't you try to grow some grass in a tray indoors. Second try is tobring some grass in from outside - though you risk bringing in flea worms with it.

Be careful what you let your cat eat. Some plants have some pretty nasty toxins to protect it from insects and such. If the cat gets into something harmful it might be dead before you can get help.
Reply:you can buy Catnip in seed form and grow that, cats love it and it save your other plants that could be poisonous to your cat

How can I protect my hanging plants, ferns %26amp; buganvilias from freezing in the cold weather. I live in louisana
Bring them in and try to put them in a sunny window such as a south facing window. If you wish, you can cut them back to make them smaller for your house. They will grow back next summer.

Water, but do not keep wet.

Do not put them back outside until all frost warnings have past next spring/summer.

We have a table in front of a south facing window and bring many of our plants indoors before the first frost which will probably be in the next week or so. We don't put ours outside until the night temps get into the 70's.
Reply:Have them indoors.

How to plant Anubias or Java fern?

I'm going to add some plants to my 5 gallon aquarium, and this is my first time using live plants, so far I think that plants like Anubias baterii(or however you spell it) or Java fern are the most suiting to me. I've been getting mixed ways of planting them (like only putting roots in substrate with the rhizome out, or attaching them to a rock or driftwood with a rubberband). I have 5 clear (almost glass-like) rocks in my tank right now, could I just tie them down to one of them and put the roots in the gravel, or do I need a more rogh type of rock (like lava rock)? Are there any other ways of planting these plants?

How to plant Anubias or Java fern?
Get sewing thread, and attach the plants rhizomes to the driftwood.

Rhizomes=equal the root structure

Do not bury the plant in any substrate, or the rhizomes will rot.

("'\(o.o)/"')
Reply:Anubias is planted directly into the substrate and will benefit from a piece of root tab fertilizer buried with it.

Java fern is the one you have to tie down to a rock or piece of driftwood. Use brown thread so it'll blend into the brown roots.

Rubber bands can degrade in the water so you should avoid them.
Reply:i would try to find a kool piece of wood at the pet shop, african root sinks right away, look for one that has openings so you can place the anubia's roots in it, i have done it, i put some gravel in it to make it more compact and to prevent it from floating, eventually the roots grab to the wood and it gives a really nice look to your aquarium! jaba fern in the other hand can just be tied to any other rock to keep them from floating. for the plants to really thrive in your aquarium you will need to feed them, provide upgraded lighting, soil, etc, do you have those?

Where the Red Fern Grows?

First, i would like to tell all of the poeple that are going to tell me to read to please not answer. i want actual help. i have to do a small assignment about this book. can anyone tell me some relationships ( about 6-8 maybe) between two characters? for example, maybe Ranie and Rubin or Billy %26amp; Grandpa or Little Ann %26amp; Old Dan or Billy %26amp; the dogs. PLEASE HELP. If anyone sees someone give some relationships and you know more, please just add what you know!

Where the Red Fern Grows?
I hope you get legitimate answers, because if someone says Billy and Grandpa had an insecestious relationship and practiced animalism and you write that down, your teacher is going to know that you didn't read the book.
Reply:I think people would be more inclined to help if you had read the book and wanted help in clarifying something you had read. I am not sure people are going to like just giving you the answer to something that they get no credit for.
Reply:You ...are missing out on a great book. Just read it...and then youll be able to answer your own questions.
Reply:i just read this book for school. im not sure what you mean by relations but here it goes. the 2 dogs wont do anything without each other. they need each other. in the end. one dog dies because he misses the other dog so much. i think u can do the rest...

I have a saliva microscope and it seems to always show ferning patterns?

Im trying to get pregnant and I have some conflicting signs of ovulation. My microscope showed 2 differnt time with full ferns, and I know the day I ovulated because i had pain for 2 days then i went away, now the scope still shows ferns, is this an early detection of preg? Also I feel some what sick.

I have a saliva microscope and it seems to always show ferning patterns?
I love my microscope!!! I really believe this is the reason why I got pregnant the first time we tried :)

What happens is that you really have to know how to read your body and know when to take you saliva. They say that you need to test your saliva AS SOON as you get up in the morning...before you eat or drink anything! Then you let it dry. I always put a ton of spit on mine so I would make sure that I would get an acurate reading...and it would take about an hour to dry. I would put the spit on it in the morning and then as soon as I got home from work I would check it.

Then usually it matched up every month. I would have my period..when ever it wanted to come! Then about 9-10 days after the first day of my period...small ferns would start to show up. Then in then next five days the ferns would be really intense. About the 15th day after the 1st day of my period I could tell I was ovulating. Then for about a day or two I would still have a few ferns showing up.

They best time to try is those 4-5 days before your ovulation day. Sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days, so let those babies swim!

The microscope actually shows the salt in your saliva. When you are getting fertile your body chemisity changes and that is why the increase in salt in your saliva. After you body ovulates your body goes back to normal and the salt goes away.

If you are always seeing ferns I would maybe have a blood test done to see if your salt levels are high. Or you might be using it at the wrong time.

Best of luck using the microscope!! I am hopeing to try this month again and I really hope that it is as easy as the first time! So far the microscope has helped!!! ;)
Reply:Hey - I heard the saliva micro is not really too acurate.

Check out http://www.creightonmodel.com/. They can hook you up with an instructor that will teach you how to use this method to achieve a pregnancy.

They teach you how to look for physical symptoms (ie mucus) to determine when you are ovulating. It will also show if you're having some fertility problems, and they will hook you up with awesome doctors to resolve the issues.

Trust me, this is really the most accurate way to determine when you are ovulating! :)

What do water dragons eat???????????????????

What is the diet of a water dragon (see details)??
I've got ferns in most of my reptile cages no problem.my bearded dragon and iguana eat a lot of it and they are fine it also helps me a lot because i know they will be fine if i go away for a week
Reply:they eat many types of food lik: crickets, locus, a baby pinky (mouse). some if they like it you can feed it some fruit like apple, pear they like all those type of things.

hope this helps.
Reply:crickets, fruit and vegetables grated small, calcium dust the food, and gut load the crickets for the nutrients, it may nibble on the fern, you may want to investigate on the web if it is poisonous to other reptiles such as iguanas, since I haven't found much specialized info on water dragons. If they are poisonous to other reps, I wouldn't use it

Does marijuana grow good with ferns?

a friend told me and i had to find out for myself

Does marijuana grow good with ferns?
Nope, dope. Ferns live in the shade and like moisture. Marijuana grows in dryer soils and although does not need direct sunlight all day, it needs a lot of it. Remember the darker the green of the plant, the less sun it needs.
Reply:I wouldn't think so, ferns grow in shade, doesn't mj need full sunlight?
Reply:I don't know where you are, but it is illegal to grow marijuana or even have it where I am. I'm sure they would grow anywhere you plant them. It's just like a plant so make sure it has good dirt and water.
Reply:no ferns grow in shady areas. Marijuana needs lots of sunlight

I loved Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It was about a boy who survives a shipwreck in a lifeboat with a tiger. Or does he? It's the inconclusivity of the ending that makes this book so compelling.

I would also recommend The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, about an autistic boy who is falsely accused of killing his neighbor's dog and is working to clear his name.

How can i cultivate wild ferns. When i lift them and bring them home, whatever i do they die.?

You can actually buy wild ferns from a lot of garden centres, it's illegal to dig them up and they don't like it anyway. A better and legal way to grow them is to wait until autumn and look under the fronds until you find dark brown spots or lines. These contain thousands of spores you can grow. Take the whole leaf, put in an envelope and leave in a dry warm place so they dry out (not too hot). You will see fine brown dust which you can blow onto a tray of peat. Cover with a plastic bag and keep moist. By next year you should see tiny ferns growing. Grow them on in pots of peat and be patient you'll have your wild ferns, probably too many.

How can i cultivate wild ferns. When i lift them and bring them home, whatever i do they die.?
make sure it is legal in your state first. here in michigan it's a $500.00 fine even if it's on your own property. i found out the hard way. but if not dig them up with plenty of dirt and use a bucket. they will die but they will come back next year.
Reply:bring a bucket of soil as well
Reply:Hi, it could be that you growing the ferns in the wrong type of soil.
Reply:It is illegal to dig up wild plants in the UK.

Leave them to flourish in their chosen conditions.
Reply:Leave them be and go to a garden centre or use the net to order by post.

Taking from the wild is simply a no-no.

There are plenty of specialist centres.

Are ferns and mosses good to have?

Is it wise to buy a house on land with ferns and mossy areas?? why/why not??

Are ferns and mosses good to have?
Ferns and mosses are lovely to look at.. but they can inicate a significant amount of moisture in the area where they are located.

Get a good home inspection before committing.
Reply:Let us apply common sense to this situation for you. The lack of sunlight allows the growth of most ferns. The excess of both moisture, combined with the lack of sunlight, allows the moss to grow. Herein you have a situation which has little light, poor soils, and the ineveitable mold in both home and garden.

Dream the dream for yourself and your husband. Make that dream a reality. The reality of this home is disaster and monies upon monies that neither of you can afford and pay. Good Luck and God Bless.
Reply:Check to make sure that moisture isn't a problem. but you can use the ferms to create some lovely shade gardens
Reply:there ok if you have rocky soil then the ferns and moss break it down
Reply:ferns look great when they grow. Im not sure about the moss unless it is on rockery stones or something like that. If it is on a path it needs to be got rid of, as when it gets wet it is very slippery

Who has been eating my java fern?

I have had a java fern in my tank from the start....I have also had white cloud minnows and a couple ramshorn snails from the start....

I have recently added cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, a molly and a half-beak to my tank.

Which one do you think might be the culprit who chewed big holes in my fern?

[just wondering]

Who has been eating my java fern?
Since it's Java Fern having the problem, you can almost entirely eliminate poor lighting, fertilization, or CO2 as the culprit. It is very unlikely that the White Clouds or Celebes Halfbeak would do that, and it is certainly not the Ghost Shrimp. It could very easily be the snails, as they are notorious for eating plants. My RCS don't bother even the tenderest of my plants, so I'd eliminate them as well. Watch either the snails or the Mollies, as they are the two most likely candidates.
Reply:If it ain't the Molly Which they do their plant eating in the dark .. How old is the tank water more than a year old I hope

You may have a sick plant and it is rotting Don't shake your head no way

To test it out take a little nursing net I call them

that is one of those little 8x10 inch size net or something like that you hang on the top of the tank to keep new fish or what ever isolated from the mother tank

Put a little piece in it And see what happens to it.

If it does rot cut down the tanks light time.
Reply:A little more info would be nice. Do you have any other live plants? What is your bedding like? C02? How long has your tank been running. These questions need to be answered because your tank might not be ready for plants yet. I waited till i had a ton of fertilizer on the bottom and mine grow great. But if i had to make an educated guess I would say your cherry shrimp are the most likely culprit
Reply:my money goes to the molly. Thats exactly what my mollies do when I try and keep any broad leafed plant in the tank with them.

Something Ive found that helps (it helps the to keep the snails from eating it too) is to put some kind of fresh veggie in the tank 2-3 days a week (every molly will have different prefrences. Mine seem to prefer yellow squash with the seeds cut out)

And Ive also found that keeping java moss in the tank helps. Java moss is soft and easy to eat (and apparently delicious, bcause they love it), so they would much rather go after the moss than any other plants.

Java moss is easy to grow to. I keep a bit of it in a fish bowl that sits in a window (no fish in it, just water and moss). It grows fairly quickly, so just every so often I add a bit more to the tank by wrapping it around a bit of driftwood or stuffing it in to a hole in one of the decorations.
Reply:hmm... I don't think any of those fish would be chewing holes in your java fern. Check your water conditions, chlorine levels, and fertalizer levels. Sounds like an unhealthy plant. Java Fern is one of those plants that nothing really likes to eat because they're really tough and they taste bad.

If there is an inhabitant doing that to your plants, it's most likely the molly. Second most likely is the ramshorn snail. Both are long shots.

Will a red tailed shark destroy a planted tank?

Im starting a planted tank, looking for any advice or tips..

29 gallon

sand/gravel substrate

java moss, java fern, amazon sword

red tail shark

5 blackskirt tetras

Will a red tailed shark destroy a planted tank?
They won't destroy a planted tank, but their activity could uproot them if they aren't well planted and the tank is small (a 29 gallon really isn't big enough for one of these guys, which will grow past 6 inches long and are quite territorial).
Reply:Nah, they're usually fine with plants. They'll graze on algae in the tank, but shouldn't uproot or eat the plants.
Reply:I have never had any problems with red-tailed sharks disturbing any of the plants in my aquariums. I have never heard of this being an issue with these fish.

Help with Tree Fern please?

I have had this Tree Fern for 4 years now and had a good show of fronds - 15 last year - 9 at tthe moment. It is about the width of a dinner plate and 34" tall, in late Autumn I cover the fronds with fleece and cut them off in the Spring.

My problem is that the trunk is starting to "dome" as opposed to a flat surface, consequently the area where the new fronds appear from is now only about 3" across.

My question is - Can I SAW the trunk straight and if so when?

Sorry about the long-windedress

Help with Tree Fern please?
Definatly Leave it how it is, it is the natural process.. Feed the plant with bananna skins and it will grow fast and stronger..
Reply:I would just let it grow! Mix 1 table spoon of epsom salt into 1 gallon of water and water it with that!
Reply:My tree ferns have "domes" on the trunks but it hasn't affected them as they have grown taller. I thought it was just part of the natural look for these plants.

1.After killing so many coons, why does Billy hesitate to kill the ghost coon? Do you agree with him, or not, and why?

2. Whose fault is it that Rubin was killed? Rubin's, Rainie's, Billy's, Grandpa's? Explain your choice.

3. How do we know that Billy is a brave and determined boy?

4. How does papa change the way he treats Billy over the

course of the novel? What does Billy do that makes his father respect him more?

5.What does the red fern symbolize?

I would be really help full if yall can help me thanks so much

Where the Red Fern Grows - need help in a bad way?
He hesitated because the coon was practically a legend and he didn't want to kill the legend. I agree with him.

It was Rubin's own fault since he tried to make Billy's dogs disobey Billy. I won't say that Grandpa's forcing Billy to go out there, or Rubin and Rainie's attitudes didn't help cause it, but if he'd only let the dogs alone, then it wouldn't have happened.

Billy is brave and determined because he decided he wanted the dogs and he worked his butt off to make and save the money to buy them, as well as take the time to train them. He is brave because of some of the things he had to do on the hunts, or to save Little Ann...can't remember if you are to that part or not. It's my fave book, but I haven't read it in years.

Papa starts treating Billy more like an adult. Billy takes responsibility and acts like an adult.

The red fern symbolizes the angel that will forever guard the graves.

Hope all that helps you...is this for a book report??? I might have to go home and start reading this book tonight...I love it!

Why do some people use bioremediation to reduce nitrates in soil/water? i thought nitrates were good?

by the way, if any of you know whether or not ferns can be grown hydroponically (in water) or have any advice please let me know, because i am planning on growing a fern in water (lawai fern) and see if it reduces nitrates. thank you so much.

Why do some people use bioremediation to reduce nitrates in soil/water? i thought nitrates were good?
too many nitrates is not good, because then you get a ton of algae growth and the algae uses up all of the oxygen causing the other organisms to die

Something simple, you can understand. Ferns reproduce by spores. More specific information about spores and pictures of ferns with spores on them are on the link.
Reply:I found this great site that will tell you everything you need to know http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultrane...

But generally ferns reproduce by gametophytes which become fertilized when they find the right conditions I.E. moisture and such because they need water for fertilization; one sperm fuses with the egg in an archegonium forming a zygote, which is the first Cell of the sporophyte.

I don't remember exactly what happens.

How do I "cheer up" my Asparagus Fern?

I was teasing my guy one day and bought an Asparagus Fern as our "love fern" from "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" and we have had it for about 8 months maybe and even though our love isn't dieing the fern seems to think otherwise. It was doing really great, out grew its pot fast so I repotted it and now it isn't growing but it is still alive (barely.) It is so brown that I have a "Charley Brown Christmas Tree" looking thing not my beautiful fern. What can I do to get it back?

How do I "cheer up" my Asparagus Fern?
Maybe you water it too much or it doesn't get enough sunlight. I have asparagus ferns in my yard that grow like weeds, despite my attempts to get rid of them. They are in full sun on a southwest-facing slope. They are planted with a lot of xeriscape-type plants (succulents, palms, etc.) and don't get much water. But, they're thriving under those conditions.

If you do try giving it more sun or putting it outside for a while, acclimate it to the increased sunlight gradually. Plants that haven't been in direct sunlight - even plants that are supposed to get lots of direct sunlight - can easily get sunburned until they're used to the sunlight.

If you do sunburn a plant, the chlorophyll in the leaves with burn up, leaving the leaves a whitish color until they finally turn brown and fall off. But, a sunburned plant will usually come back to life by putting it in a shadier area for a while.
Reply:Try to give it a little bit of fertilizer such as Miracle Grow or Peter's plant food.. and try some different soil. Make sure the environment is correct for the plant. Too much or too little sunlight can have a strong effect on it. Put some nice music on and maybe a windchime nearby. You really do need to give the plant a pep talk, they do respond to love.
Reply:I find ferns quite fragile, I think it might be too late. Check the roots aren't in water. Try a feed and maybe consider repotting it.
Reply:Asparagus ferns are very metro. They love Broadway musicals and French impressionistic art. That's way most testosterone laded guys don't care for the plants.
Reply:Humidity is the key. Try hanging it in your bath room and run hot water in the shower to create a humid mist. Then get it outside as soon as the weather permits. They do not do well in dry conditions. Mine live in the bathroom during the winter months.

Good Luck

Need advice on creating a fern garden.?

Hi everyone, after installing a new water tank i have found i have a small (2mtsx2mts) plot of vacant lawn i would like to turn into a fern/succulents garden. The area backs onto my garage and faces west. It gets shade until about 9:30 in the morning otherwise its full sun until about 3:30-4:00pm(in the summer) My soil (or lack thereof) is a horrible heavy, sticky clay - will ferns or succulents grow in this? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what types of ferns/succulents work well together? Bed preparation? Is this location suitable for its intended purpose? I should mention I'm in Brisbane (Warn to hot summers and cold/frosty nights during winter. Any comments or queries would be gratefully received. Thanks. Col.

Need advice on creating a fern garden.?
You need ferns that can do well in sun.

Thelypteris kunthii (Southern Shield Fern) %26amp; Dryopteris ludoviciana, or Florida Shield Fern are sun-loving ferns:

Both Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) and Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides ) will tolerate full sun if well watered. The Christmas Fern plant can tolerate more sun than most other ferns if it is provided with adequate soil moisture.

Lady Ferns (Athyrium filix-femina) tolerate full sun in the North in a damp site. For the best results, plant in soil well supplied with organic matter, that doesn't dry out.

The southern lady fern is supremely adapted to a wide range of sun and soil characters. They can be quite drought tolerant, after they are established. These plants will grow in both full sun to total shade, but will require more water, and a more organic soil in the sun.

Royal Osmunda regalis Royal ferns grow from a central rhizome, are deciduous, can be 3-5 feet tall and are hardy in Zone 3. They have upright, branching, arching fronds and send up a fertile blade. They will grow in sun to shade. They prefer very acid humus soils that stay moist to boggy.

Sensitive Onoclea sensibilis Sensitive ferns have creeping rhizomes, are deciduous, grow 1-2 feet tall and are hardy to Zone 3. The fronds are upright and horizontally arching. Sensitive ferns will grow in sun to shade. They prefer acid humus soil that stays moist to boggy. Easy to grow.

With only a few exceptions, ferns prefer limited sun exposure. You'd be irritating both yourself and your pocket book if you opted for ferns. Succulents are the oposite of ferns in-so-far-as their desire for sun. If ferns are red heads, succulents are brunettes.

As a Yank living in Florida, I had to do a little searching on-line to get a better idea about Brisbane. From what I've found, you have some excellent sources of information in your area. I've listed a few of the web pages I found below. I cruise the web quiet a bit getting ideas for my garden, but I find that talking with other, local gardens helps fill in the gaps.

You also have 2 major gardens that you can visit to see if anything there suits your fancy. I understand that the city garden was flooded a few times over the years and they kept loosing plants, so the garden at Mt. Coot-tha was created. My guess is that would be the one to wonder though for your purposes.

Which ever plants you choose, I wish you enjoyment.
Reply:Ferns can grow just about anywhere provided they have unrestricted access to moisture, particularly during their growing season. If an individual fern is short of the essential moisture it needs it will wilt and can quickly dehydrate to the point of no return.

The trick with creating any fern garden is to provide a) the moisture in the first place, b) provide sufficient shade to reduce the evaporation of that moisture to a minimum. Finding these already available in your garden may be easier than you think
Reply:TO LOOSEN THE SOIL THAT IS MOSTLY, ADD A LOT OF SAND, SO THE WATER CAN PENETRATE THE SOIL

YOU WILL NEED A CCOUPLE OF SHADE TREES,KEEP THEM CUT BACK O PRODUCE SHADE, OR THE FERNS

WILL NOT GROW IN MOSTLY SUNLIGHT

GOOD LUCK
Reply:I would not bother. Too much work and worry. Why not go for sun loving plants?

Growing Java Fern?

How do you grow a java fern? I found an online place to order rhiozomes from, I've heard you need to anchor it on something. I only have a 2.5 gallon tank at the moment so is there any way I could keep it alive in there until I get a 10 gallon? Does anyone have any links about growing the fern? Thanks!!

Growing Java Fern?
Java ferns are one of my very favorite aquatic plants, so beautiful and so undemanding! Here is a link concerning Java ferns from one of the very good aquarium-related websites:

http://www.aquahobby.com/garden/e_javafe...

You will find that anchoring your rhizome to a piece of driftwood, bogwood, rock or even a manmade decoration is all you need to do to help it become established. I prefer to use black sewing thread to tie it onto the wood, tying knots which are secure but not overly tight. With time, the fine black roots will take hold of your chosen wood or decoration and cover the thread you originally used.

As for keeping it alive in a small tank, yes, you can do that as long as you give it appropriate light and there are some nutrients in the water. Java ferns are not very demanding for nutrients; if you have a small fish or two in the tank they will likely produce enough waste, converted by your biological filter to nitrates, to keep the ferns alive. As for lighting, I have found that even the standard flourescent fixture sold in aquarium "kits" is sufficient for Java ferns, no need to invest in specialty lights for this plant.

Even if you leave it floating until you can move it to its permanent home, it should survive just fine. When it produces its adventitious (or 'baby') plants, they will do well to simpy float until they grow large enough to anchor on an object in the tank.

Good luck and happy fishkeeping!
Reply:Java Fern really requires little or no special care compared to other plants. A 2.5 gallon tank is a perfectly acceptable home as long as you are able to continuously trim it back. It will get very large if given the time, so just keep cutting back adventurous shoots. When you only have the rhizome, you can either use a rubber band, fishing line, kite string, gravel, or gravity to hold it down. If you plan on attaching it to wood or rock, secure it with string that you can later remove (the rhizome will attach to the wood/rock and anchor itself). Be sure it gets at least 6 hours of light, and it will be nearly impossible to kill. Email me if you have any questions.

Soop Nazi

EDIT: You're right, Bettas wouldn't even consider touching the Fern. No issues there...
Reply:Java Fern is actually very easy to grow. Use a rubber band piece of string to tie it loosely to a rock or piece of driftwood and let nature takes its course.

How to keep houseplants watered while away for 2 weeks?

I can probably save the smaller ones, but I have 2 large australian tree ferns with pothos vines in large pots. They each easily drink a quart or so of water every 1-2 days. I'd just hate to lose them. Any suggestions?

How to keep houseplants watered while away for 2 weeks?
Put them in the bathtub and add 3-4 inches of water. If the pots don't float, keep adding. That should keep them going.
Reply:Got a friend or a neighbor you can trust?
Reply:Head to your local nursery or garden supply store. There are watering tubes you can buy to set on top of the soil and you will cut a small slit in the hull and it will time release moisture to your plants and trees.

What to plant in my Scottish front garden now?

I'm getting some work done tomorrow and this will leave bare soil. I'd like to plant something there that will be interesting without growing too high (less than a foot) and will flower for a good part of the year. What can i plant about now or is it too late? If so, what and when do I plant? Doesn't have to be flowers. Ferns would be nice too.

What to plant in my Scottish front garden now?
Ferns are lovely, but they need a shady, damp position. Rose of Sharon (or Hypericum to give it it's proper name) is a great ground cover plant, has pretty yellow flowers on for most of the summer and spreads like mad. I live in Drumnadrochit near Loch Ness and it grows well in my garden so I know that it is fine in extreme cold conditions.

A trip to a garden centre or old fashioned nursery might help you to decide what to plant. Usually they are very helpful and if you want enough of something, might give you a discount.

good color till a very hard freeze, and then they go away, leaving you with a clean slate to start over next spring.

Where to buy Java fern?

Hi all, I'm milking you lot for all the advice I can, I'm getting some brilliantly helpful answers!

:o)

I'm going to get some Java Fern for my new tank which should arrive in the new few days, it's a BIG tank so I'm looking to get some established Java Fern already planted in bog wood or rock from an online retailer.

I found some ebay, the biggest seems to be ranging anywhere between 6"-12" and I was hoping that some of you friendly fish enthusiasts might point me in the direction of a shop you have used or heard good things about. This will be my first venture with live plants so the Java fern seems to be perfect for a novice like me but I would very much appreciate any experience you have had with a reputable online shop.

Please link me to your suggestions, I don't care about finding the cheapest, I'm caring more about quality and other factors which I might not be aware of. The bigger the better in my opinion.

Thanks for your time.

Best care for outside ferns?

I want to buy some ferns to hang on my porch. I get morning sun, up until maybe 2:00 pm. What is the best environment for ferns and how hard are they to care for?

Best care for outside ferns?
All ferns prefer well-drained soil high in organic matter. For heavy clay soil, mix a 2-inch layer of composted pine bark or other organic material into the top 10 inches before planting to improve drainage. Poultry grit (crushed granite) also works well to improve drainage and should be used in addition to organic material, not as a substitute. Sandy soils also benefit from a 2-inch layer of organic material tilled in because it helps them retain moisture. It is wise to prepare a large area for ferns before planting, not just individual holes. This will help prevent water from filling the holes and rotting the roots. Ferns may also be grown in raised beds, which provide good drainage.

Most ferns require a moist, shady spot to grow — either in a wooded area or near the north side of a building. Many need plenty of moisture during the growing season and should be given an inch or more of water per week if not supplied by rains. Fertilizing should be done in spring, just after new growth has begun. Ferns are very sensitive to over fertilizing, so it is best to use a slow release fertilizer, such as Osmocote 14-14-14. Complete organic fertilizers also work very well. Always follow package instructions for fertilizer rates.

A 2- to 3-inch layer of leaves or pine straw, applied in the spring and in the fall, is an excellent mulch for ferns. Ferns grown in wooded areas benefit from the falling leaves and pine needles in the fall. See the chart below for cultural requirements of specific ferns. ive ben working at a nursery for 4 years now
Reply:Ferns do not like direct sun. So, be careful of that. Also, spritz the leaves with water at least once a week. When it starts to get warmer, you may want to do that every morning.

Will ferns grow in part sun part shade?
They should be ok in partial shade. I had some along the front of the house that got shade in the morning %26amp; evening; otherwise it was full sun (north side of house in Pasadena,Tx). It did rather well with a decent amount of watering.
Reply:Many will. We have several that are in part shade and they do just fine.

Java Moss/Fern?

Okay, I breed guppies, and I've heard people say that Java Moss or Java Fern is good for breeding. I've never had live plants in my tank, and I'm planning to get some Java Moss or Java Fern.

So my questions are, what care is needed? Should I get the Moss, or the Fern? Do I need a special light? Do I need special fertilizer?

Because if it doesn't require much care, I'll probably get one, for my guppy fry's sake.

I'll choose best answer and I'll appreciate all answers.

Thanks!

Java Moss/Fern?
here is a pic and a little info on java moss:

http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/plant/Java_Mo...

and java fern:

http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/plant/Java_Fe...

i would reccomend java moss as guppies are small enough to hide in it but the big guppies have a hard time getting to them. i believe it is safer for them.

the jave moss will grow onto anything hard, and spread from it, so you might need to trim it back, as you do with all plants every now and then. as stated earlier, i would recoment java moss, but both are great options. why not get both, space permitting? just any average light should do as long as it penetrates the water and reaches the plant. you do not need any special fertilizer. you can if you want, but it is not a nessesity. it jsut makes the plant grow faster, pretty much.

best of luck =]
Reply:They are both lowlight plants, so as long as you have fluorescent lights on top for a good amount of the day they will be fine. I'd say the moss would be better for the frys sake. I've never found the moss in pet stores, only the java fern, so you might have to order it online.
Reply:The moss would be the best choice, you can either tie/weigh it down or attach it at the surface of the water.

Both do well in low light, the moss would be best for the fry, and the older fish would love to hide in the fern.

Why are ferns classified as plants?

Biology Question/

Unlike algae, which are protists, ferns are considered true plants, what characteristics allow ferns to be classified as plants?

Why are ferns classified as plants?
Ferns have these characteristics of plants:

1. multicelular

2. autotrophic

3. eukaryotic

4. cellulose cell walls

Ferns also have vascular tissue, though there are nonvascular plants.
Reply:They are all multicellular, are autotrophic (produce their own food, i.e. photosynthesis) and grow until they die.

I need a korean side dish recipe for seasoned bracken fern stems...it's called "gosari" or "go sa lee"

OK here you go but something to keep in mind if this is a fresh bracken fern then you must prepare it properly or it is poisonous.

so in the case that the fern is fresh then take of all the leafy parts and the stems of the leaves and take the stems and cut them into 4 inch pieces.. then put it in boiling water for apx 7 min or until pretty soft.. after put in in cold water and then wash and squeeze out all excess water

this process will make it edible..

if it is a dried version that you buy at the store put it in cold water overnight and it will come back to its original state.. after squeeze out all the water that you can and set it aside

you will need

for apx 2 cups of fern

3 tblsp of soy sauce

3 or 2 cloves of garlic crushed

chopped green onions (optional)

and 4 tblsp of sesamea oil

salt and pepper

put the fern into a big bowl and put in all of the soy sauce the garlic green onions and mix it in throughly.. alot of korean people mix it with thier hands ( just a tradition) mix it for a while

and then put the sesame oil in a pan and heat it up put your mixture in the pan.. stir fry it on med- high heat for 6 min and lower the heat to med- low heat and stir occasionaly add a little bit of water at a time if it looks a little dry add some salt and pepper to taste or add more soy sauce and when the fern is soft it is done..

Hey which is better author for you in english novels is it Julie Garwood or Fern Michaels??

It's a matter of taste really. I prefer Julie Garwood on the whole, but, I think Fern Michaels' Sisterhood books are far better than any of Julie Garwood's. Most of Julie Garwood's books are Historical Romances. Only lately has she started writing contemporary thrillers. Fern Michaels books are all more contemporary. So comparison is a bit tough.... If you can, read both authors. That's my advice.

Hey which is better author for you in english novels is it Julie Garwood or Fern Michaels??
I like Julie Garwood the best. I have almost all of her books and think she is a great novelist. I have read a few of Fern Michaels and just wasn't impressed all that much.

What is a good outdoor plant for the front of my house?

I recently removed all the bushes from the front of my home. I have a three season porch that now needs some fantastic landscaping in front. The area spends most of the day in sun.......Would ferns be a good idea?

What is a good outdoor plant for the front of my house?
Ferns don't like full sun....they would wither up and die with too much sun.

You could go with daylilies, ornamental grasses, coreopsis, coneflowers, mini butterfly delphinium, phlox, Salvia, sedum,

or even hedge roses.
Reply:a tree
Reply:hydringinas, I think I spell that right anyway they are a pink flower that grows upward so you will need something in the pot they usually come with it and every year I put mine out by the walk way one on each side, and maybe some ferns with stones, that will look cute
Reply:Ferns like damp and shade. For full sun you should plant azaleas and other flowering shrubs. Lavender is easy as are potentilla, hebe and hypericome. Happy planting
Reply:Ferns tend to like shade. Maybe plume or pampas grass would work better than ferns.

Light:

Even if you don't have a sunny window, try to give your plants at least 10-12 hours of light. While stronger light would be better, it can even be the same lights you would use to read in that room. The less intense the light, the longer you should keep it available. Light surfaces will also reflect additional light to your plants.

Soil:

Your choice of potting soil will have a huge impact on caring for the plant. The best potting soils are either soil-less (made primarily of peat moss and vermiculite) or a high quality soil-based mixture (usually made of equal parts of peat, compost, sand and garden soil). While a soil-less mix is lighter and retains more moisture and air, soil-based mixes provide a healthier balance of microbial activity, making your plants more resistant to diseases. Avoid inexpensive, low quality soils. They are often too heavy and have poor drainage, aeration and moisture retention. In fact, their only virtue is their low cost.

Watering:

When you do have time to water, be sure you thoroughly soak the root ball of the plant and, if possible, mist the foliage. Even though letting a plant stand in a saucer of water isn't usually a good idea, it won't hurt if it happens for a day or two every now and then. If you have a chance when you are potting or repotting, consider using a polymer crystal. Mixed into the soil, these crystals will hold a considerable amount of water, releasing it as it is needed. The crystals expand and contract as water is available, which also helps with aeration. If you have rain, well or distilled water available, it is healthier for the plant.

Fertilizing:

Unless the plant is looking unnaturally pale, don't fertilize. Fertilizing just asks the plant to grow and growth requires lots more light and water. If you do fertilize, use a water soluble food at half the recommended strength.

Containers:

When you know you aren't going to have much time to care for a plant, put it in a container slightly larger than is recommended under average conditions. Plastic pots will retain moisture better than clay or wood.

Drafts:

Most plants can tolerate a wide range of temperatures if they are not in a draft. In addition to windows, heat/air ducts and cold air returns often create problems for your plants. Drafts will also cause your plant to dry out more quickly.

I hope this helps you a bit and good luck?

Have a great day princess xoxo

Reply:I can tell you what I do, bonsai@75.00 was a little pricey, I felt bad for the little guy and freed him from his constraints, the same as I did for my jade and both failed me wanting to be tied up and all that? I started a sweet potato on my fridg and with the warmth it grew absolutely wonderfully down my fridg with bright yellow green ivy.

The avocado split by a toothpick and allowed to sprout became a stupendously wonderful and huge plant.

Water plants I use comparable to floating candles and use for decorative purposes.Sometime I add a koi, a particularly dirty fish that the plants thrive on.

I use window hooks from flush on the ceiling to slowly dropping down to provide a slanted look over my dish area and add plants to provide privacy and beauty.

I had a peace lily which was huge and had to have rollers in order to move.Outside I have to have my wild jimson weed, not recommended but beautiful, opens up at night, very fragrant flowers(moon flower) toxic to humans. I use aerated soil of vermiculite and peat but my gardenia likes to be packed in tightly with a cast iron pot as she is very hungry for iron and thrives under these conditions.

I normally give a good soaking when the rain pours or a full moon or when instinctively from testing the soil for dampness make the determination on watering and how frequently, a great deal has to do with the aeration of the soil.
Reply:I don't know the latin names or much about the plant itself other than that it's nearly impossible to go wrong with an air fern. They were very popular with apartment dwellers when I was a youth. I think they were even sold in a little shell with a magnet glued to the back so you could stick them on the refrigerator door. They don't need water or soil and little light. They were a big deal in say the seventies or early eighties. Also, what about outdoor container gardening? I, too, have a small apartment and only 2 small windows in the place (basement apartment). I purchased several generous containers (Big Lots and Walmart have good deals) and put herbs and some vegetables in those and they are my little patio garden. I'm sure the library would have a good selection of books for how to, etc. I bring my containers in for the winters which are fortunately short here as I am able to bring them outdoors in the nick of time as per sun deprivation...
Reply:Hi

I'm terrible at keeping in door plants they always seem to die on me, but I've always been successful keeping spider plants, they are also pretty in a hanging basket. :-)

Reply:I really enjoy both boston and english ivy, quite hardy and are good for those who happen to have a less-than-green thumb. I would also recommend buying an already grown bonsai, the chinese sweet plum is nice.
Reply:Prayer plants need little light and have varigated green leaves some with red veins that make them interesting looking. The reason for the name is that at night they fold their leaves as if in prayer and in the morning fold down again. My husband got spooked by mine thinking that something was in the pot moving at night! LOL
Reply:to kill cactus %26amp; jade you must overwater them; overwatering can kill as fast as not watering them at all; if you have good luck with philodendrens, have you seen some of the new colors etc they have come out with recently? Their is a beautiful black beauty that is stunningly beautiful I hope to get this year, %26amp; i have seen wonderfully colored red ones as well. You mentioned having narrow window sills, have you considered putting hooks in the ceiling %26amp; having some hanging ones?
