Are there other books that are like Marley and Me?

I am reading it right now, so please don't give spoilers.

Are there other (adult) novels about friendship with pets? I heard Where the Fern Grows is a great one. I know it's a kids book but I want to check it out. I think Because of Win-Dixie is another good kid's one.

Try From Baghdad With Love about a dog that is rescued by some soldiers over in Iraq
Reply:"Truth and Bright Water" by Thomas King
Reply:"Where the Red Fern Grows" is good at nearly any age, I think.

There is also "Old Yeller" by Fred Gipson

and

"Sounder" by William H. Armstrong.

...all of these books were made into movies, I believe... all of them good books about dogs as a bit more than 'just pets'--

Reply:Hmmm not sure

maybe Of Mice and Men

the one guy had a pet mouse....
Reply:I loved the movie "Harry and Tonto" with Art Carney. It might have been based on a book. It's about an old man living out his life from place to place with his cat Tonto. Tonto is the only stable thing in his life. Check out the Black Stallion or Lassie too.
