I loved Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It was about a boy who survives a shipwreck in a lifeboat with a tiger. Or does he? It's the inconclusivity of the ending that makes this book so compelling.

I would also recommend The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, about an autistic boy who is falsely accused of killing his neighbor's dog and is working to clear his name.
