Please can someone tell me how to get rid of weed that growing in a pond?

this weed is not the floating weed and spreads very quickly, dont have a name, looks a bit like fern but very dark green, would like to find something that could be added to the water, although there are trout in this pond, area of pond is about 100ft x40ft.

Please can someone tell me how to get rid of weed that growing in a pond?

Reply:Sounds like one of the oxerginating plants %26amp; by removeing it you then leave space for other plants to overtake your pond
Reply:Sounds like blanket weed. You can get "stuff" to pour into the pond from some pet shops. I use barley bags which takes longer but its more naturally and does work.
Reply:maybe the trout will eat the weed. lol. just ask garden peoples or plant peoples. they are BIG help.
Reply:This may be Canadian Pondweed or the African Variety that is plaguing Lough Corrib in Galway at present?

You do not state the reason why you wish to remove the weed so I can only assume it is for esthetic reasons?

If your pond holds trout the water quality %26amp; balance must be ideal! weed such as those mentioned above are ideal oxygenators %26amp; help to maintain a healthy balance within the pond they also harbour insects on which the trout feed!

I would be very concerned about upsetting the balance by removing all of the offending weed but if you still wish to proceed then I would suggest getting your waders on %26amp; removing it by hand.

If it is of the variety mentioned above take care not to leave lots of broken "Bits" floating around as these will quickly grow roots %26amp; re-establish themselves making the problem worse!

I personaly add the removed weed to the compost bin where it does a great job!

Adding a weed killer may not be wise for the fish stocks?

All the best, Smiffy
