Why do some people use bioremediation to reduce nitrates in soil/water? i thought nitrates were good?

by the way, if any of you know whether or not ferns can be grown hydroponically (in water) or have any advice please let me know, because i am planning on growing a fern in water (lawai fern) and see if it reduces nitrates. thank you so much.

too many nitrates is not good, because then you get a ton of algae growth and the algae uses up all of the oxygen causing the other organisms to die

dont know bout the other question
