What is this animal in my garden?

i noticed whilst hanging out my washing, something has scratched up in small patches my brand new laid turf. after close inspection i noticed some pellet like droppings too.(1inch long) they were black and orange (from seeds i think) in places. anyone ideas on what type of animal/bird may have done this.

reason i say bird as well is because i once witnessed a bird chuck bark chip over the lawn with it beak trying to eats the ants coming out of the nest i had under my ferns and it made right mess. i didn't disturb it tho. it was quite comical to watch.

so yes any ideas would be apprieciated, i just hope it isn't rats. i don't know what there droppings are like and no idea if this is normal behavior for rats to scratch at grass. hedgehogs prehaps?

What is this animal in my garden?
Sounds like a rabbit or a groundhog has gotten into the garden. Birds I don't think have pellet-like droppings although I could be wrong.
