Will a bird come back to a nest site she had babies in a couple of weeds ago a second time in the same season?

A pair of birds built a nest, raised a family and then left the nest in a fern hanging on my porch. I cleaned the nest out a couple of weeks ago. It seems that the same bird is back building a new nest (I can't tell if it is actually the same bird or another one of the same species). Is this possible? Can birds have more than one family during a season?

Yes, depending on species....many do have more than one brood per season. Also, if a bird builds a nest that is unsuccessful..they will continue to nest for as long as food is available. House Finches are known to build nests in hanging plants...perhaps this is the bird you are seeing.

Reply:Yes, It must feel safe there. If the nest was destroyed it would only make another and it would be done quickly.
Reply:yes
Reply:if there first family dies and its early enough then yes. It mostly depends on the bird.
Reply:usually with birds, is the male will make a nest to try and attract a mate, and they have been known to steal or reuse old nests.
