How to plant Anubias or Java fern?

I'm going to add some plants to my 5 gallon aquarium, and this is my first time using live plants, so far I think that plants like Anubias baterii(or however you spell it) or Java fern are the most suiting to me. I've been getting mixed ways of planting them (like only putting roots in substrate with the rhizome out, or attaching them to a rock or driftwood with a rubberband). I have 5 clear (almost glass-like) rocks in my tank right now, could I just tie them down to one of them and put the roots in the gravel, or do I need a more rogh type of rock (like lava rock)? Are there any other ways of planting these plants?

How to plant Anubias or Java fern?
Get sewing thread, and attach the plants rhizomes to the driftwood.

Rhizomes=equal the root structure

Do not bury the plant in any substrate, or the rhizomes will rot.

Reply:Anubias is planted directly into the substrate and will benefit from a piece of root tab fertilizer buried with it.

Java fern is the one you have to tie down to a rock or piece of driftwood. Use brown thread so it'll blend into the brown roots.

Rubber bands can degrade in the water so you should avoid them.
Reply:i would try to find a kool piece of wood at the pet shop, african root sinks right away, look for one that has openings so you can place the anubia's roots in it, i have done it, i put some gravel in it to make it more compact and to prevent it from floating, eventually the roots grab to the wood and it gives a really nice look to your aquarium! jaba fern in the other hand can just be tied to any other rock to keep them from floating. for the plants to really thrive in your aquarium you will need to feed them, provide upgraded lighting, soil, etc, do you have those?
