What could be an alternate ending to Where the Red Fern Grows, instead of Little and Old Dan dying?

I believe this was a book before a movie, but what the heck *shrugs*



I don't really see another ending. The point of the book/movie is love/responsibility/sacrafice. His pups sacrificed themselves to say their master's life. Its sad, but a very beautiful ending. I guess you could have Little Ann live after Old Dan died, but I think it's a more honest ending for her to die. Plus, you wouldn't get the Red Fern from where the pups were burried...thus eliminating the title from the book/movie. Nope sorry, ending is perect the way it is.
