How do I get rid of bracken ferns from my garden, without using pesticides?

I have read that you can use lime in the soil, but am not sure how to apply this and what amount to use and if it will kill off other plants!

Hi Michelle.

Lime will do nothing to reduce your Bracken problem, in fact it may encourage them.

Bracken spreads via thick liquorice like underground roots. These roots are somewhat brittle so it's not that easy to dig them out as they snap if they're pulled to hard. If you want to remove them without the use of pesticide then this is really your only option, but any bits left in should be capable of producing a new plant. So make sure you dig it ALL out.

If you can consider the selective use of a pesticide then spray with a Glyphosate (systemic) based herbicide. Glyphosate is inert in the soil and will not have any residual effect on subsequent plants.

Whatever you decide, I hope you get rid of the problem and have trouble free gardening in the future.
Reply:The best way is to dig them out as soon as they appear.
Reply:I bought a weed killer thing the other day,I thought it was just normal spray but turns out its like a blow torch on a long handle and it just burns the blighters, its brilliant because it s safe to use where children might be playing afterwards.
Reply:without using herbicide ... the only sure way is to pull it out
Reply:Pesticide is for pests not weeds !!
