What is the first book or novel that you remember?

I was just curious as to everyone's "first real book". Mine was "Where the Red Fern Grows" waaaayyyy back in third grade.

What is the first book or novel that you remember?
My first "chapter" book was "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" that I was reading when I was about seven years old. One of my family's treasures is a portrait done by an art student of me, sprawled on the floor reading a book that is recognizably a copy of "Alice" that we still have.

PS: The portrait dates from 1936 or 1937.
Reply:"The Box Car Children", possibly third grade
Reply:I read a lot as a child, but the novel I remember the most was Animal Farm by George Orwell. I read it in 8th grade. I have thought of that novel countless times whenever a politician rears his ugly head...

It is on the list of one of the 100 best English-language novels ever written.
Reply:The first book that popped into my head was Where The Wild Things Are. I also remember reading The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe in grade school and The Hobbit in 7th grade.
Reply:When I was in first grade, I read "Little Black: A Pony" by Walter Farley.
Reply:Old Yeller, is the first novel I remember
Reply:Hmm.....probably either The Hobbit or The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe....or something else that I can't at present remember.
Reply:It's a toss-up between "Old Yeller," which I may have just seen as a movie, and "The Yearling," the author whose last name is Rawlilns, I think.
Reply:My Little Red Story Book.

This is the first in the series of the "Ginn Basic Readers." Encountered it at age 6.
Reply:Interesting one this.

I remember 'Trumpets in the West' by Geoffrey Trease (I think). I must have been about eight. Also an older book called 'The Boy Edwin' about the Norman Conquest. Looking it up now, I see it was in fact called 'Edwin, the Boy Outlaw'.

I liked historical stuff.
Reply:the first book that i remember reading was a collection of russian fantasy tales(translated). i remember that the book's title was "a collection of russian tales" and strangely the name of the author was not given on the cover or alongside the stories or anywhere else . it was difficult to read as i was just in 2nd grade so my mom helped me read it out.it was quite an unusual book for a toddler to read but i'll always remember that book because i loved it so much.

thanks for asking a question that brought out happy memories.
Reply:the bible......... damn those churches and religious schools....
Reply:The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson followed by Thoreau's Walden. I read these in maybe 5th grade. I remember doing a presentation in my 6th grade English class on Walden.

Emily Dickinson is the reason I am a poet ... so I owe her a lot in my eyes.
Reply:A book called Yellow Eyes by Robert Montgomery. A book about a Puma.
