How can I become more knowledgeable?

I usually have a lot of free time on my hands and summer is coming up which means I will have even more free time out of school. I love learning and being smart. I'm in high school right now and I want to be smarter. I don't want to read a pointless book like Where The Red Fern Grows. I want to read a book that will educate me and that I will use in life. What are some topics that are important today that I could read about?

How can I become more knowledgeable?
Pick up a newspaper, subscribe to Newsweek (which will give you snipets of just the essential news info) or pick up a book on a subject that you enjoy and read about it. I'm not intending to say I'm "smart," but I learn a lot by picking up non-fiction books that focus on a particular subject (physics, history, geography, art) and read it for fun. Make sure you get a book that is interesting for you to read, otherwise there's no point.

Recommended: The People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn

The Fabric of the Cosmos by Brian Greene

Generation of Vipers by Philip Wylie
Reply:Where the Red Fern Grows is NOT a pointless novel.

It teaches acceptance and maturity.
Reply:"A Tale of Two Cities"
Reply:1.) Read the news paper (or on-line) This will make you more worldly and help you appreciate you love of knowledge. Maybe you could read up on all the president hopefuls.

2.) Get a library card! There is no reason for you to spend a ton of money on books that you might end up mot liking.

3.) Read an intro to psychology book. This will teach you on how and why people do what they do. I think you might like cultural psyc (like how Japanese find it an insult to look some one in the eye while in the middle east if you don't its a sign of weakness)

4.) This is just my opinion but I think that it is extremely important to learn about all the different world religions. Maybe read up on the Dalai Lama who in the Buddhist religion believe is the reincarnation of Buddha himself. He is a very important person who has an unbelievable insight on how any why we are not happy.

5.)You can also do this on-line or you can read some magazines on modern technology and what are the news advancements.

All of this stuff is practical and will make you not only sound smart but be smart.
Reply:Reading is the best source of information. Science and technology magazines and national geographic are good reads and you can also find so much information in the newspapers about current events.

You could look into taking courses by correspodence that would get you ahead in school.
Reply:When I had that problem, I indulged my fascination with science, and read the chemistry and astronomy shelves in the library from one end to the other. Pick your topic(s), and go for it.
Reply:Read books about life that are written by successful business people. These folks are the smartest people you can ever imagine and will give you a wealth of information about lots of different things, not just business.
Reply:We are heading toward a future of, "relax." Practice your lawn sports.
