Why was Billy crying in Chapter 9?

Besides the obvious reason for crying, Billy could be crying because he is happy, proud or ashamed. Consider what has happened in this chapter to cause an emotional response? Sorry, thats the best I can do, since I don't have the book, and my knowledge of the plot does not extend to Chapter summaries. It is an awesome book however.
