When to cut or separate my Boston Ferns?

I have several hanging baskets of ferns. I will be keeping them in my greenhouse throughout the winter months.I was advised to cut into 4 different part and plant 2 cuts into seperate baskets. When would be the best time to do this and also should I give the plants a small trim?

When to cut or separate my Boston Ferns?
I vote for right now.....since they will need some trimming over the winter, go ahead and make the cuts, get them in new baskets ready to go for spring time.
Reply:Do it when they're root bound, which sounds like now. You have to disturb the root system to repot a rootbound plant and you have to disturb the root system to separate them. You may as well do it in one shot and disturb the roots once rather than twice. The less you mess with the roots the better chance of success you have.
Reply:Personally, I'd wait until early spring (March in my locale).

They do get rather messy inside in the winter, so they'll need trimming periodically. Also, watch out for scale insects in your greenhouse.

Good luck!
