Tree root near foundation - How to kill it?

I have a fern like tree that is growing near my home's foundation. I have cut the tree (about 3-4'' in diameter) down to the stump. I am worried that this persistent tree's roots will damaged my foundation. Is there any sure way of killing this thing short of digging it out?

Tree root near foundation - How to kill it?
Cut it below ground level and drill a hole down into the remaining root..........fill with real buttermilk (Not fat free) cover with black plastic, light excluding kind and reapply the buttermilk every 3 or 4 days for a couple of weeks. The enzymes in the buttermilk cause rapid decay to set in the roots and the exclusion of light prevents the root from growing.
Reply:You could always try Round Up. However, if the roots HAVE damaged the foundation, you will need to dig up and out the root, dig around the foundation, clean it off (no dirt) and seal the crack using masonry crack repair. And the only way you will know is to did down. You are certainly welcome to wait until a few heavy rains (and thus saturated ground) to determine if the foundation is leaking, but do you want that hassle? You see, my foundation leaks and only does so when the water comes down about 2" an hour (it never lasts an hour), thus ruining my carpet in that room. Not a fun way to find out about foundation cracks -- oh yeah, I've got to do all I told you to do, so I know the work that is involved.
Reply:Since this is a huge problem and could cause alot of problems and expense, I would consult some profession advice. Most trees are dead once cut down, so that maybe all you need to do. depending on the size of root, kind of tree etc. But if this was my problem.. i would not mess around, I would get someone in there that knows what they are doing!! ASAP
Reply:you are WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!!!!

about the old testament. the rules still apply since the beggining of the creation of the earth. Jesus came to obey them but not to destroy them in the cross. the rules still apply and it will always be that way till the eart and the sky die.
