How do I get my ferns to grow?

They looked so good in the summer and a friend of mine told me to cut them real short when it started getting cold.Well, now they will not grow back.I love having plants inside, but I'm not very good at caring for them. Any suggestions?

How do I get my ferns to grow?
I got this from books on houseplants,so its not silly. When you use warmer(room temperature) water on the roots(watering with it) and mist your plants with colder water, it causes them to drink. I can honestly say I have started trees this way. Ferns seem a little hard for me too, maybe because I've never checked to see if it takes a certain soil PH. But try misting with cold water, they drink, and grow faster.
Reply:If you aren't willing to care for them, you don't deserve to have them.
Reply:You need to keep the air around them very moist ( water mister ) and the temperature must be warm or above warm. Encourage any new growth and monitor it constantly.

Might consider re-potting. Maybe.
Reply:Ferns are basic plants, you find them in all types of climate. you should understand where they grow naturally. So first they require a moist climate and shade. they love high humidity that is why you find them good in summer. As you do for others plants you must water all plants only to keep them moist %26amp; not wet i.e. there should not be any waterlogging, see that the water is drained out from the pot. you can ocassionally spray water or mist them to increase humidity. if you had a green house then in winter you could have kept it there,
