If you are referring to the book version, he didn't know the brick building was a school because, he had never seen a school before or attended a school, he was home schooled by his mother. He thought at first that it was the home of a rich man and when he heard all the kids playing and yelling, he thought that it was a party or something.



"Billy"...lol (like that name) looked into the window of the store and saw... The full "reflection" of himself for the first time in his life. Along with that, he noticed "everything under the sun" inside of the store as well, including.. overalls, jackets, bolts of beautiful cloth, new harnesses, collars, bridles, and a 2 barreled gun!
