Where did the idiotic phrase "tastes like chicken" originate?

I can think of two movies off hand that use that phrase, Lion King and Fern Gully, and I know there are a few more 90's movies but I can't remember them. Are they parodies of an old commercial, or was it some catch phrase?

Where did the idiotic phrase "tastes like chicken" originate?
Well. the fact is that a lot of meats that most people aren't familiar with eating really do taste like chicken, and since chicken is a meat that most people have eaten, it was a good way to describe how the less eaten meats taste. For example, armadillo, frog, alligator and turtle really are similar to chicken. Hence, tastes like chicken. I agree, though, that it is used too much and about things that have nothing to with the phrase itself.
Reply:When trying to describe the flavor of meat the listener has never eaten, a common declaration is that it tastes like chicken. The expression has been used so often that it has become somewhat of a cliché. As a result, the phrase also sometimes gets used for incongruous humor, by being deployed for foods or situations to which it has no real relevance.

The expression has made its way into popular culture in a variety of contexts. The phrase has made modern appearances in the media, such as in The Lion King, Six Days Seven Nights, The Matrix, Stargate, Surf's Up and the initial season of the reality television show Survivor.

As an explanation of why unusual meats would taste more like chicken than common alternatives such as beef or pork, different possibilities have been offered. One suggestion is that chicken has a bland taste because fat contributes more flavor than muscle (especially in the case of a lean cut such as a skinless chicken breast), making it a generic choice for comparison. Also, chicken reportedly has lower levels of glutamates that contribute to the "savory" aspect of taste sometimes known as umami; processing or tenderizing other meats would also lower glutamate levels and make them taste more like chicken.

Another suggestion, made by Joe Staton of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, is that meat flavors are fixed based on the evolutionary origin of the animal. Accordingly, birds (the most numerous form of meat by type) would naturally taste more like chicken than mammals. Furthermore, based on evidence for dinosaurs as the ancestors of birds, reptile meat might also taste somewhat like chicken. Seafood, however, would logically have a more distinctive flavor. Staton's lighthearted study of the question was published in the Annals of Improbable Research.
Reply:no - years ago, it was sort of a cliche - when you asked someone who a different meat tasted, let's say rattlesnake, they almost always answered "kind of like chicken"

whether the meat was snake, or buffalo or whatever.

i think it is partly because it is difficult to describe how a meat tastes, and maybe also to convince kids to eat it - most kids are OK eating chicken.

But somewhere along the way, people started using it in a more joking manner, to describe the taste of everything from beetles to worms to humans.

I don't really know when it was first used, perhaps when Christians first went to Africa to convert the cannibals??
Reply:No Its what people say about things that they are trying to get someone else to eat, usually for the sake of their survival.

Most of us are not inclined to eat rattlesnake meat for example so if someone tells you it tastes like chicken you might try it.

We're usually not worried about food having NO flavour. Its when food has TOO MUCH flavor that most of us bail out.

the fact is unseasoned chicken is fairly bland and doesnt have a lot of flavor anyway so its probably close to the truth in a lot of cases.

the usage of the phrase has become a parody of itself in a lot of cases, being used to describe the taste of anything, even aliens from outer space.

Reply:I think it was not actually originated in a movie. It was just an example people really used in reference to other types of meat like rabbit, duck and it sorta became almost a joke after time.
Reply:God was getting tired of assigning flavors so he just made lotsa stuff taste like chicken. He figured no-one was gonna eat that crap, anyway.
Reply:I think it came from the idea that every body always says that a weird meat (alligator, crocodile, snake, rabbit) taste like chicken! Especially down south!
