How should I go about replanting such a large plant?

I have a very large staghorn fern (4' in diameter) that broke away from its original board planting.

How should I go about replanting such a large plant?
Well, everyone else is answering the question like it is a potted plant!

I have an aprox. 100 pound hanging staghorn fern and have done "surgery" on it several times. If your Staghorn is the common type and has many pups(as opposed to the Grande that is just one large fern) I would definitely divide them to make it easier. You can use scissors or a knife to cut the shields apart. The only part you must not damage is the new growing tips that will become the "horns". You can also take off many of the bottom layers of shield to make the plant thinner. After you get the shields divided they can be stuck onto new boards to be hung. I have used fishing line or wire and have seen chicken wire used. Attach the wire to one side of the board and stretch it across the shield. Attach that to the other side and go back and forth untill the shield/plant is secure. The new shields will grow over the wire.

Good luck :-)
Reply:Simply dig out the root about 6" for every foot of plant. Make sure it haas a ball of dirt with it. Then dig a hole 2 time the size of the dirt ball and roots. Fill in 12 way with organic soil and plant as normal backfilling with the organic material as well.
Reply:get the next size pot ,potted plants don't need a lot of room to grow healthy.besides it helps prevent over watering.
