I want to no how to take care of ferns?

I have to ferns that are in a hanging basket and I do not no how to take care of them, so I was wondering if someone could please help me to get better knowledge of how to take care of them.? Can they be over watered? Can I cut the ones that look brownish and it not kill the fern? I heard that you have to use a spray bottle and spray the leaves of the ferns, is this true or not and how often do I spray them if it is true.

thank You

totally confused

Cut the brown ones off, if the plant is root bound, which it will be... you need to basically drown the whole base in some water. Get a large bucket and hold it down in the water until the bubbles stop. Sometimes the roots are so crowded, when you water it, the water takes the fastest way out and doesn't get to the roots.

Mist it with a water bottle often. It needs to be in a larger pot soon.

They don't like cool weather, anything under 50 degrees is bad for them.

If you are watering them too much, you'll see a bit of yellow on it.
Reply:Ferns need a lot of water and shade. I don't think you can over water them. I set mine in my wet basement every winter and they have lived for 5 years in the same pot. They like misting, but I never do it.
Reply:Ferns generally like a moist environment, and hanging baskets may dry out a little too much for them - this depends on where you live, your weather, as well as your watering habits.

Ferns such as Boston ferns (Nephrolepsis) are great and respond to misting of their fronds, so I'd recommend this. It can sometimes cause some leaf browning though, so monitor its effects. Watch out for winds, as this can dry them out, and cause scorching. Beware of mixing ferns with other plants, in the same growing pots, as they can emit substances which inhibit other plants' growth - (it's a process called allelopathy).

Ferns typically do not like to be in swamp-like conditions, so avoid overwatering, allowing them to dry a little, between waterings.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Reply:I think you are talking about Boston fern? They are generally hanging and almost weeping, right?

The most important issue is either several hours of early morning or late afternoon sun or filtered light. Ferns need consistency with being uniformly moist, water and maybe set it in its liner with water standing for ten minutes. let drain and put back into liner after ten minutes. Allow soil to become dry to one inc he.

Yes it is good to keep all brown growth trimmed. No do not mist as you can Will spend the rest of your life doing so .

two more things , ferns like cool air flotation . second they do not like their fronds touched with hands . Be care full, if you break new growth the frond will die.

Good luck Pauly
