Not as much as manhandling it during the trim. The meristematic(growth point) area of a fern is on the edges of the leaves. so wherever it touches might brown or die back, but it sounds like you are doing something right.
I have an indoor fern. It's leave are touching the ground. Can I trim it? Or will it harm the plant?
Most ferns can be safely trimmed, but why not re-pot it into a larger pot?
