In what kind of setting would you find the walking fern?

Look for areas with limestone boulders or outcrops with decent shade and lots of moss growing on the boulders. I've usually seen it in mountain areas where it's cooler, sometimes in stream valleys. But without the combination of limestone, shade, and moisture, you won;'t find the plant.

Some examples of what I'd consider "typical" sites I found on the web: http://www.westol.com/~towhee/images2/wl...

It's not very common, so you may have to look in a few places before you would ever find it. I've only ever seen it in about 8 places.

The walking fern (Asplenium rhizophyllum) is generally described as a Perennial Forb or herb. This Fern is native to the U.S. (United States) .

The Walking Fern may be available from nurseries, garden stores and other plant dealers and distributors

Reply:it is a rare, low lying fern native to North America.

These hardy plants can be found in shady spots of limestone ledges and limy forest places.
