Asparugus fern help?

i have a very large asparagus fern that i got as a gift, i honestly have no idea how to care for it so i tryed to look up info and was some what helpful but now after about a week of having it, it really feels dry (the needles) and i have been evenly moistly watering it once a week, plese others who have this plant please help! how much sun does it need? or water? how to keep the needles from falling off?

*****Houseplant Cultural information: All members of the Asparagus family are quite easy to grow. They are actually related to the Asparagus spears we buy at the grocery store. Florist use Sprengeri Fern as a filler green in flower and funeral arrangements. Asparagus 'Sprengeri' can be grown both indoors and outdoors. Outdoors they are commonly used as a bedding plant in mixed container in full sun.

Indoors place your Asparagus 'Sprengeri' in either full sun or very bright indirect light. The more light the better.



Asparagus sprengeri can consume a lot of water... so check it for watering every few days until you become familiar with its needs. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. A mature pot bound Aspargus sprengeri fern can consume quite a bit of water so it may be necessary to water the plant two or three times. Remove any water from the drip tray that has not been absorbed by the plant within 24 hours.



Feed monthly with Peter's Houseplant Food if the Asparagus fern is actively growing. Bi-monthly if inactive.
Reply:While they like sunlight, you can dry them out if it's too sunny or hot. If you're watering and misting it but it's still dry, the only thing I can think of is that it's too sunny. I have had these for 20 years, including one that got to be 12 feet long, like a green fuzzy waterfall that dropped brown needles continuously. It's part of their cycle of new shoots coming in and the old ones dying out. As much as I love them, they do tend to be messy plants that drop needles as the old stems die out. The best thing to do is when you start to see a stem start to get brown needles, just chop it off at the base. A new stem will start growing before you know it. And be prepared to vacuum a lot.
Reply:I hope you planted the roots in soil. Asparagus is a grass and it likes a lot of lime. Give it a small amount of soluble fertilizer the next time you water it.
Reply:well, I have seen these growing at the tops of ditches, so It may need moderate watering. It may also need a deep pot to grow it's roots in and provide adequate drainage.
