Are there any way to save a rotting staghorn fern?

1. the rotting due to over watering.

2. A newly grown frond had rotted completely, left one old frond which still appears greenish.

3. this staghorn was plucked from a tree bunk and the root remain partially attached to a piece of wood.

Are there any way to save a rotting staghorn fern?
There is always a chance of saving it but I think in this case your chances are very slim. I would hit the woods looking for a new fern and try to take better care of this one. Don't over water. There are commercial products that you can use in the water to reduce rot as well.
Reply:I have recently acquired one from its previous owner and don't know a lot about its care. It looks healthy to me... but your question about rotting has me wondering...

... also I would like to divide it and repot it if possible. Any clues, anyone?
Reply:the chances of saving ANY plant with rot are slim once rot has set in but try the following:

1. Cut away all rotting/rotted tissue (roots, leaves etc.)

2. Re-pot in fresh compost which is BARELY moist

3. Keep compost on the dry-ish side and put the plant somewhere shaded, out of direct sunlight and without extremes of temperature (a cool bedroom maybe)

4. Keep your fingers crossed!



In future avoid overwatering, even with ferns which enjoy moist conditions. You can also add antifungal chemicals when watering but you shouldn't really need these if you are careful when you water.
