Check in chapters 7 or 8. Billy's grandfather teaches him to make a trap into which he places a bright shiny object and some nails at an angle. For several days it doesn't work, no coon, but when the human scent finally wears off, he catches one! (the coon reaches in for the shiny object and when he tries to hold the object AND lift his paw out, it is caught on the nails.)

Sometimes the fresh outside air works wonders for a plant that's been inside for months. Make sure it is well-watered but not soggy. You might need to repot it into a larger pot if it is rootbound or you find the soil dries out too quickly. Give it a diluted fertilizer; sometimes I find that feeding every week with a very dilute liquid plant food (plenty of nitrogen) works better than a stronger solution less often. Mist the leaves, especially if you live in a dry area. I live north of San Francisco, and I have potted ferns on my porch. When we have our usual morning fog, my ferns don't need additional misting, but in our recent heatwave, they've needed a bit of help.

What can I grow under high acid fir/cedar trees?
What I know I don't want are ferns (i live in the NW, we have plenty) or an invasive vine or any kind of ground cover that spreads out of control...or for that matter, bamboo. Ideally I'm looking for perennials that add color. multiple suggestions that I can place together would be great. Thanks

Living in S.C. my ferns do die out in winter, they like shade, mine are in sun so I have to water them every other day, they require it. Come spring they jump right back to life. Pretty much any climate that is not to cold and ferns will thrive...

Ferns are year round plants. They are also shade loving plants so dont plant them in direct sunlight. If you plant them before a rain then maybe you wont have to water them. They like humidity also so if you are having a dry spell you can mist them to give the humidity they need.

hi i have a 55 gallon tank with two floresent light bulbs side by side one is a power-glow and the other is some weird brand but would java fern or java moss grow in that. I dont want to get a new light set up or any of that stuff buy i would get new bulds (18in) or what kind of floresent bulbs would work? and if your going to tell me that i need a new hole set up dont bother!

java moss and java fern grow easily in most light just get some fluresent tube lights and run them for a hour a day and your plants will be fine

Just get some and try it out. Run the lights for 10-12 hours a day and those plants should grow fine.

When you do go to replace your bulbs, I would suggest that you broaden your search pattern a bit.... Don't confine yourself to looking in pet stores. You can get daylight fluorescent bulbs dirt cheap at place like Home Depot. All you need to do is get the right length and diameter. (Easy task there, they only come in a few different diameters)
I prefer to keep the lights on 12 hours a day, but you really don't have to. I had tossed some Java Moss in a half filled 10g tank on the floor when I was tearing down a tank, and I forgot about it. There was no light on the tank and the room was unused so the only light was what came in thru the window with the blinds closed. I was pretty surprised when I saw that after a month the moss had kept growing.
You've chosen probably the best plants possible, IMHO, for a low light, no hassle tank.
Just remember - don't bury the rhizome (thick part that the leaves come off of) of the Fern - they *hate* that. :)

Sounds odd coming from TheFLowerLady, but can a LeatherLeaf Fern grow well indoors?
I bought a sickly one on clearance ($2) and now it is huge and healthy on my front porch, in it's original 1-gallon plastic pot. Problem is, we get gale-force winds (50mph+ on a GOOD day) and they are unbelievably dry. We're scheduled for them to start this afternoon/evening. I want to bring my fern in so it doesn't dry out or blow away but need to know what it will need to remain healthy indoors. Thanx.

How do I keep birds from building nests in my hanging ferns?
The "green friendly" way is to simply check the baskets for nesting materials and remove them by hand. Eventually, the birds give up. You may also try small shiny pinwheels in the planters that move in the breeze and frighten the birds. It also looks festive. I have had this problem before, it is a nuisance.
How do I keep birds from building nests in my hanging ferns?
I happen to be a bird lover and love the fact that birds procreate. It's part of nature! I, myself, would welcome the little family of birds!
But, since you asked, I suppose you could construct some sort of scarecrow and place it in the yard, or hang an owl figure in the hanging fern, if that's possible. That would be the humane way to go.
I am sure, even before I glance, that someone on this site is going to tell you to shoot the birds. But I would not only not suggest this, but say shame on you to the inhumane people that find laughter in someone's serious question.

Reply:I was told to use moth balls. After a few waterings, they will disappear.
It worked for me.
Reply:Probably can't . If it bothers you, just keep removing nest material . I've had birds nest in hanging plants several times , %26amp; it never hurt the plant . They never stayed for more than 4-5 weeks , so is only temporary . Some birds are very particular , as to elevation of their nest . You could try changing the height of the basket. Not likely to work, but might .

1) Sevin is an insecticide , so not meant for birds . - %26amp; they won't know it's toxic %26amp; get the message that they're supposed to move . ;D
2) Poisoning birds is generally not a good thing,( %26amp; won't get you points for good advice )
3) The fern is probably coming back into the house when summer's over . Sevin probably never going to make anybody's list of "Household Items You Can't Live Without "
4) The white dust all over it, might detract from the fern's ornamental value ..... Maybe.
5) Sevin isn't the cure-all, be-all-end-all , alpha %26amp; omega, solver of all the world's problems . (That several people I know think it is ;D) Just use it for it's intended purposes.(as labeled)

Is it just me or is Fern Britton intensely annoying?
