What is the besy way to overwinter ferns inside?

these are in hangers and pots. one of the ones in a pot is over 3' in diameter. i've tried keeping ferns growing inside but doesn't work well, been there done that. these are gorgeous plants!

What is the besy way to overwinter ferns inside?
Sounds like Boston ferns. They need a light room but not direct sunlight. Don't water them until the top inch of soil is dry and don't let water sit in the saucer. Take the plant wherever you can and mist the foliage with water a few times a week. And you can use a half strength Peters or Miracle Grow fert once a month. That should keep them going till warm weather returns and you can take them outside again.
Reply:You do not indicate where you live. But the following answer may give you some ideas.

Ferns are tender plants that are happiest under cool greenhouse conditions over winter. You can have leaf-drop in a dry apartment or house.

You could construct a coldframe on a balcony, but if it gets cold for any extended period, it won't provide enough protection. An old trick is to place an incandescent light bulb in a box under your coldframe. This will provide considerable heat on the coldest nights. Cut back foliage to a manageable size and keep plants on the dry side under these conditions

Another possibility is to cut back the foliage, unpot the plant, choose a few of the best looking tubers, cut them out and repot them separately into small pots. Enclose the pots in partially closed plastic bags (such as zip-lock bags), and place them in a bright place inside. If you can keep the pests off, they should be ready to go back outside in late spring.

1.how do we know that billy is a brave and determined boy.

2.how does papa change the way he treats billy over the course of the novel? what does billy do that makes his father respect him more?

3.what does the red fern symbolize?

thanks

Where the red fern grows?
trying to cheat on homework huh?

The red fern symbolizes new life

Billy gets the hunting dogs himself and proves that he can train them and be a man.

We know he is brave because despite all the hardships that he went through and after Dan a Ann died he had to overcome there death and realize that it was a part of life.
Reply:Please please PLEASE do your own homework. pay attention in class and study hard like a normal student would and should. The last thing you need to do is come on the internet waste your time and ask for others to your work for you. If you don't learn and understand the material yourself, how will you do well on quizes, tests, and get a good grade at the end?

When I was your age the internet wasnt even around.

now u got freakin yahoo answers, google, all that resources on the internet. There is so much media and distractions these days thats why kids are getting so spoiled rotten.

For your own good sake, do your own homework. No one on here should (unfortunately, some will do your work for you) do your work.

I have a kangaroo paw fern and it has black spots and leaves are dropping like crazy. is it fungus. help!?

By far the most common and damaging problem involved in the cultivation of Kangaroo Paws is the dreaded Ink Spot Disease or Ink Disease as it is often referred to. It is thought to be the fungus Alternaria alternata. Ink Disease causes the blackening of the leaves and flower stems starting close to the leaf tip and progressing down to the rhizome. For some plants such as A. flavidus the disease appears to cause only cosmetic problems. It can be fatal to species such as A. manglesii and A. pulcherrimus.

I am having a real problem with black sooty mould. I just cut a large "fire cracker vine" down off of the side of my house because it was covered with soot, scale and ants. Before I replant the area is there something I should do to treat the soil and trellis. I think the vine may come back and would like to avoid the problem in the future. It is also spreading to near by penstemon and kangaroo paws. Help! Chris

A. Fungus moulds are a common problem at this time of year. Try spraying with a fungicide containing copper, Bordeaux mixture is also suitable and it would do no harm to spray the trellis with the same. First wash off the trellis with detergent.

When my large bed of ferns dies off in the fall, can I cover the bare spot with mulch w/out killing the ferns?

I don't know what kind of ferns I have....they're large, the kind I've seen forever in forests. They are very hardy. But when they die off i the fall, the fern bed looks pretty awful (it's right in front of our house). I thought it would at least look a little better if I could cover up the bare dirt with either mulch or wood chips. I can't really plant anything there because I'd disturb the ferns as I was planting. Thanks much !

When my large bed of ferns dies off in the fall, can I cover the bare spot with mulch w/out killing the ferns?
As long as you don't pile it too deeply or use *hot* mulch (fresh mulch that hasn't aged long enough), you should be fine. Remember, in the forest, ferns are covered in leaf litter, dead tree branches, pine needles, etc. over the winter. It may slightly delay their emergence -- then again, it may advance it, if it keeps the ground warmer! I say give it a go and see. Good luck.

Help with Staghorn Fern !?

I just got a Staghorn Fern from Target this week, it's a small one but it came planted in dirt, I have been reading that they need to be planted in moss, I would like to put it in a hanging metal basket, should I just fill the whole basket with moss and set the plant in there or what? Should I remove the dirt it's in? Please help I don't want to kill it. Thanx

Help with Staghorn Fern !?
I am a Certified Master Gardener. Horticulture was my major in college, and I volunteer at my local university botanic gardens.

In nature, staghorns are found growing in the "V" of tree limbs. The ferns root themselves naturally via wind-or water borne spores.. The best thing to do for a staghorn is to try to recreate the most natural setting possible.

So, you are going to mount the fern on a 12-inch (or wider) board, about 16 inches long. Also buy a roll of 20 pound test fishing line at a sporting goods store or wherever.

Have the section of board or plank cut at your local Home Depot or lumber yard. Get them to drill a centered hole two inches from the top, or you can do this at home. You will use this to hang the mounted fern from, in indirect light.

Buy about two bags of sphagnum moss, and a small bag of a high-quality potting soil, such as Scott's Professional or Kellogg's brand.

Put the section of board on a table or workbench. Gently loosen the staghorn fern from its pot. Do not remove any soil from the rootball. Place the fern and its rootball in the center of the board. Gently pack spaghnum moss all around it, so the rootball is completely covered by the moss, about 2 inches thick. The moss is going to protect the rootball, and store water for it.

Take 20 lb. test FISHING LINE and wrap it around and around the rootball with the moss. Wrap horizontally, then vertically. About 10 - 15 times around with the fishing line is adequate.

Once you have determined that the rootball and moss are as securely wrapped around the board as possible, tie the fishing line off in back, and knot it about 6 times. Cut the line about 2 inches from the final knot.

You are now ready to hang your beautiful staghorn fern in a location which receives INDIRECT LIGHT ONLY. Like on a sheltered porch or patio, out of direct light.

Water your fern every other day, and let the moss absorb as much water as it can.

Enjoy your beautiful fern for decades to come.

I sincerely hope this helps.

Where the red fern grows scene?

ooh heyy. i just finished the book where the red fern grows. its written by wilson rawls. i have to pick a scence from the book and transfer it into a 3-D scene. i was wondering which scene should I choose that is easy to create a 3-D scene. please help!!?

Where the red fern grows scene?
Here are the objects and places from which to choose.

Objects/Places

Snake River Valley: A valley in Idaho, where Billy lives as a grown man. The story opens in this part of the country. It is far from the Ozark Mountains, where Billy grew up as a child with his family and dogs.

cups: The prize cups Old Dan and Little Ann win in the hunting contest. Billy keeps them on his mantel. Old Dan's is big and gold, and Little Ann's is smaller and made of silver. Old Dan's is from the actual hunt, and Little Ann's is from the beauty contest.

coon hounds: A type of dog used for hunting raccoons. This is the only kind of dog Billy wants and he wants two of them. Old Dan and Little Ann, the dogs Billy eventually gets, are coon hounds. Old Dan is bigger and stronger, but Little Ann is smarter. Together, they successfully hunt raccoons and even go on to win a coon hunting contest. Old Dan and Little Ann work together as a team; they look out for each other and Billy. They even save Billy's life. The dogs also give Billy's childhood meaningful memories that he grows to cherish into adulthood.

Ozarks: Where Billy grows up with his family. One of the finest hunting places in the world, the Ozarks are a place of rich, fertile soil where huge red oaks grow. It is not highly populated. The Illinois River runs below the fields where Billy's log house is. The land where Billy lives is Cherokee land, given to his mother because she is part Cherokee. The Ozark mountains are where Billy spends all of his time hunting with his dogs.

steel traps: Traps used for hunting. Papa buys Billy three steel traps and Billy could not be happier. He uses them to catch river coon.

Samie: Billy's cat. Billy catches Samie in his steel traps the first day he uses the traps. It causes a huge commotion in the barn and all of the animals and Billy's sisters howl and yell at the sight. Samie is a very sneaky and nosy cat; he watches Billy's every move and gets caught in the trap numerous times.

ringtail coon: A type of raccoon. Billy is determined to catch this animal, but it is too smart for him.

It eats the bait from the traps, springs the triggers, and sometimes turns the traps over altogether. With help from his dogs, Billy is finally able to catch a ringtail coon.

K.C. Baking Powder Can : An old, dirty can Billy finds in the campground where he first finds the magazine with the advertisement for the dogs. He cleans off the can and uses it as a bank to hold the money he saves to buy the dogs.

Tahlequah: The town where Billy picks up his dogs. Billy travels to this big country town by himself on foot. He is taken aback by all of the stores, people, and merchandise in this big town. He has never been to a town like this before. It is here that the schoolchildren make fun of his clothes and call him a 'hillbilly'.

sycamore tree: The tree that Old Dan and Little Ann chased their first coon up. This is the biggest tree in the river bottoms and Billy is sure that he will not be able to chop it down. For days, he chops at the tree. He is in tremendous pain all over, but he will not give up. He says that he owes this to his dogs. Finally, Billy asks God for the strength to chop the tree down. It falls and the coon gets out of the tree. Old Dan and Little Ann then go on to catch their first coon.

ghost coon: Coon that lives upriver in the part of the country where the Pritchard boys live. The Pritchard boys bet Billy that his dogs cannot catch the old coon that has been running around the country for years.

blue tick hound: The Pritchard boys' dog. He is straggly, mean, and dirty, just like the Pritchard boys. When Billy and the Pritchard boys are out hunting for the ghost coon, this dog shows up. Old Dan and the Pritchard dog get into a bad fight. Little Ann jumps in to help Old Dan and they end up badly hurting the blue tick hound.

mountain lion: This is the animal that ultimately kills Old Dan. The lion tears Old Dan to shreds. No matter how much Billy does to doctor Old Dan, it is of no use. His wounds from the lion are too deep and he eventually dies.

red fern: Just as Billy is about to leave the Ozarks, he goes to see his dogs' graves one more time. Growing in between Old Dan and Little Ann's mounds is a beautiful red fern. Billy is in shock as he recalls the old Indian legend about the red fern. The legend is about a little girl and a little boy who get lost in a blizzard and freeze to death. In the spring, when their bodies were found, a red fern had sprung up between them. The seeds can only be planted by an angel and once they are planted, the red fern will never die.
Reply:I read this when i was like in 3rd grade best book ever, well anyways do the last scene where both dogs graves are and the Red fern grows!

Here's what I do. I look on eBay, do a search for "fern" under Home %26amp; Garden - Plants. That will bring up a whole list of ferns and you can scan down that list until you see a picture of one that is like your own. See what they call it. Tree fern advice?

We bought a tree fern in the spring and it has been a wonderful feature in the garden in the summer, but now with autum finally with us and the impending long winter about to arrive we dont know what we should with it we are told to cover it in garden fleece and keep it watered but not too sure if that is the right thing to do. please if anyone has one or knows what to do with it.

Tree fern advice?
The most important thing is to protect the crown - the top where the magical fronds curl out from. I have gently put a soft duster (new/no chemicals) into the crown - gently pushing down with fingertips. Or you can put fallen leaves in there instead.

Do not water it in the winter - loads of water was for the summer!

If it gets really cold - more than -5 then I wrap a fleece blanket round the trunk as well and if the leaves are still there gently over them too.

They're so beautiful aren't they?

Reply:I live in the south,But my sister said she dug hers up leaving a large root ball covering it with a plastic bag and wetting it down real well and stored it in the house. If yours isn't too big? Since they are native to Tropical rain forests I would try to keep it as warm as possible especially when there may be a frost coming.
Reply:What species? Australian tree ferns can survive down to 20 degrees while others cannot take any frost at all.
Reply:I live in Scotland and have over-wintered both of my tree ferns successfully.

I place straw in the crown and remove them to a frost free part of the garden, raise them up from ground level if like mine they are kept in pots. Garden fleece may also help, although I have never used it.

In spring feed %26amp; water well.

Good Luck.

MY FERN iS DiEiNG! HELP!!!!!!!!?

so i have a fern and its in a room where its next to a window and i water it like every few days....but like some of the lil leaves r turning yellow and brown and like dieing!!! what am i doing wrong?!?! how do i fix this? should i cut the dieing ones off? how do i keep it from dieing???

MY FERN iS DiEiNG! HELP!!!!!!!!?
Refer to internet how to care for those delicate plants. They are in fact very fragile. Overwatering, underwatering or temperature changes can harm them. Make sure your fern is always in the same temperature room, and not exposed to the sun directly. They like more shady areas for best growth.
Reply:We have a big fern at work that I take care of. Some of the leaves do the brown dead thing and I cut them off. But the talk stalk like thing in the middle of it is separating into new fern branches.
Reply:First of all, it depends on what species of fern you have. Some are easy to care for and others are more difficult. If yours is a Boston Fern(typically found in homes and offices), bright light, no drafts, medium moisture and misting the leaves will help. After you've determined which species of fern you have, then you can research the "how tos" of your particular fern.

That green mossy stuff from my java fern...?

I have a java fern, and it keeps making that green flossy filament to hold the daughter plants in place. Will my fish get tangled in it, or choke on it if it tries to eat it? Because one of my small fish just ate some and there's like a long stringy green filament coming out of its mouth!!! Is it going to choke?

That green mossy stuff from my java fern...?
Your Java fern is infected with green hair algae. Take it out if your can and kept in a bucket of water in the dark for a couple of days until the algae dies off.

If you can't remove the Java fern, reduce your light exposure period of the tank, change water to reduce ammonia and nitrate and add Seachem Excel. Hopefully you don't get a serious hair algae outbreak before you can act.

If the fish can eat it, it should be fine. Else it would also disintegrate after some time.
Reply:How long has this been hanging out of his mouth? What type of fish is this and what size? I keep Java fern as well and have never had this happen with one of my fish. I would like to say "no he is not choking" but I can't say for sure in all honesty. Would like a little more info though. You can add additional details to your question and answer mine, or email me through my profile and I will try to help further.

Red Fern Type Growth in Bathroom.?

Behind the toilet there is a small crack between base board and wall. A red colored fern type plant is growing there.

What the heck is this and how do I get rid of it. This has happened before to a neighbor in their bathtub, but they never figured out what it was and ripped out the entire bathroom to get rid of it. I really do not want to go that far.

I have poured bleach on it turning a tan/white color. It is quite fiberous and I am unable to break it apart. It also appears to be wrapped around the hose that leads to the toilet tank.

Thank you in advance for any ideas on this problem.

Red Fern Type Growth in Bathroom.?
sounds like prelude to invasion of the body snachers, check under bathroom for wet spot, if possible. you may need to lower humidity in house if its a type of mold growth. mold needs 70% humidity to grow and a bathroom has it, you may need to install an exhaust fan in there. as for killing growth, try brush-be -gone or round-up herbicide.mold is lethel if enough of it is around. if you have crawl space under house, go look and see.if not sure what to look for, call exterminater ( bug killer) or plumber
Reply:If possible dry out the area with a fan and treat with bleach . 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Sounds like some baseboard and possible sheet rock removal is in order.

Good Luck!

FERN advice how do I keep it alive??? Mine die.?
fern s are a tropical plant, they grow in swampy places, high humidity and dampness, there fore your plant needs the same enviroment in order to live, place it in a shady spot, north facing window or window that does not get direct sun light-- water regularly, keep the leaves clean by misting it often,,make sure your container has drainage holes in the bottom,- the soil must never be allowed to dry out or be too soggy, also repotting it and putting in sphagnum moss in the new pot, fern s need to be kept at bout 50 to 70 degrees temperature, a few species will survive above 70 degrees, click on FERNS to see which these are and where to buy em---never use chemical ferilizer s , they are sensitive to it s un balanced formula, i use home made mature tea, a small amount every 2 weeks, depending on how big your pot is and size of fern
Reply:Well i'm probably not much help to you but i can tell you that make sure you DO NOT water them in the sun or have them in direct sunlight because this can burn and really damage your fern causing it to maybe die
Reply:THEY NEED CONSTANT WATER AND WARM TEMPERATURES. ALSO HIGH HUMIDITY
Reply:Ferns like shade and hate direct hot sun. They don't mind early morning sun though. They hate going dry, so keep theem well watered. Also ferns are frost tender. Bring them in a sheltered spot during winters if you have cold winters. This is all I do, apart from giving them an annual haircut at the end of summer. In fact, mine never seem to die, even if I neglect it.

Ferns love the company of other plants, because it gives them humid conditions. If you keep yours indoors, make sure you spray them with cool water to keep its surroundings humid. Don't put them in room with a Aircon or heater. Keep it in a well lit position but not on a window sill. There, they can burn by both hot afternoon sun and freezing night temperatures.

The sporophytes are what you see (ferns, and trees themselves.) The gametophytes for each are much smaller.

Info on a staghorn fern?

I have a staghorn fern that has grown really big, right now it is in a planter with a peatmoss mat,but I would like to transfer it into a bigger area to grow, any suggestions on what I need to do to maintain it it's starting to get brown on the tips of the leaves. Thanks to all who can give me any info on this.

Info on a staghorn fern?
Hi there, do you mist regularly? These plants need a lot of humidity. The brown tips are an indication that the air is too dry or it is receiving direct sunlight. Is the plant in a room where you have central heating?

Here are some tips for you

Light: Filtered sunlight is best. Avoid direct, hot sun. These plants often grow in trees where light is filtered by the leaves and branches of the tree.

Temperature: Best between 60oF and 80o F. Winter temperature should not fall below 45o F.

Water: They like a humid atmosphere. Humidity should be applied indirectly (ie. spraying the air near the plant but not directly on the foliage). Spraying leaves directly can result in leaf spotting. Potted plants should be watered when the soil is dry. Take care not to over-water which can cause fungal rot and death. Watering can also be accomplished by dunking the plant and allowing the water to drain off.

Fertilizing: Very little is needed. Growth is slow. Plants grown on wood slabs can be fertilized by placing some decaying leaves behind the shield fronds. Sea kelp is a good organic fertilizer.

Repotting: Potting isn't necessary but can be done. Pot in orchid substrate mixed with sphagnum moss and a dash of charcoal to keep it fresh. Plants can also be mounted on wood slabs by the base of the plant using wire or plastic strips. They can also be hung in wooden or wire baskets.

Propagation: Through offsets that emerge from the base of the plant. Raising a plant from spores is a slow and difficult process and not recommended for the beginner.

Common Problems: Scale insects and fungal disease.

Special Hints: To grow on a piece of wood: Tap nails into a piece of wood in a pattern slightly larger than the base of your fern. Lay the plant in position between the nails with some pre-soaked sphagnum moss underneath. Tie some fishing line or wire to one nail, cross over the plant base, and tie to another nail. Repeat until the plant base is secured to the wood. Eventually the plant will grow over the supports, hiding them from view and further securing itself to the board.

Good luck
Reply:I'd check a few gardening sites first, but I'm pretty sure you can split the plant in half and make two out of it. Be sure to use vitamin B to protect against shock, and give it a good shot of fertilizer.

Plot (5 major event of the story in that they occured) in where the red fern grow?(try 2 seperate it)?

Plot (5 major event of the story in that they occured): Billy lives on a farm. He wants two good coonhounds very badly, but his Papa cannot afford any. Billy works hard, selling fruit and bait to fishermen, so eventually he has enough money for the dogs. He gives the money to his grandfather, who orders the dogs for him. Billy sneaks off in the middle of the night to go to town and pick them up. While in town, other children pick on him, but he stands up for himself and is helped by the marshal. On his way home, he and his two pups sleep in a cave. Outside, they hear a mountain lion, and the pups bravely howl back. He decides to name them Old Dan and Little Ann. He can see that Old Dan is very brave, and that Little Ann is very smart.

Once home, he wants to begin training them. He has to have a raccoon hide to train them with. His grandfather shows him a way to set a trap that will catch even a clever coon. Just when he is about to give up on the traps, he catches a coon. The next day he begins to train Old Dan and Little Ann. By the time raccoon season starts in the fall, they are ready. On the first night, his dogs tree a coon in the biggest tree imaginable. Billy immediately sees that it will take days to cut down. He is determined to cut it down, because he told his dogs that if they could tree a coon he would take care of the rest. His dogs are counting on him. His parents bring him food. His grandfather shows him how to make a scarecrow, to keep the coon in the tree so he can go home and eat dinner. When the big sycamore finally falls and his dogs catch the coon, he is very proud.

Billy goes coon hunting almost every night. His father relieves him of his chores, and Billy gives him the money from his coonskins. Sometimes, coons try to trick his dogs, and Old Dan gets into trouble. One night, Dan gets stuck in a muskrat hole. Another night, he climbs a tree. Little Ann is usually too smart to get into trouble, but one night, after the first snowfall, she falls through the ice on the river. Billy barely rescues her.

One day, Billy and his grandfather make a bet with Ruben and Rainie Pritchard, that Billy's hounds can catch the legendary "ghost coon." The Pritchard boys set out with Billy to see if Old Dan and Little Ann can catch the ghost coon. The coon leads the dogs on a long, complicated chase, and the Pritchard boys want to give up. But Billy is determined. Finally, when the dogs have the coon treed, Billy refuses to kill her. Just as Ruben starts to beat up Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann begin to attack the Pritchards' dog. Ruben runs to attack the dogs with an axe, but falls and kills himself. Billy is very distraught afterward. Finally he goes to Ruben's grave with some flowers, then feels much better.

Billy's grandfather enters Billy in a coon-hunting contest. He, his grandfather, and his father take a buggy to the contest. It is filled with adult coon hunters with expensive gear and beautiful hounds. Somehow, Little Ann wins the beauty contest on the first day. The other coon hunters are very kind to Billy. Billy and his dogs qualify for the championship round. While Billy, his papa, his

grandfather, and a judge are out hunting with coons, a winter blizzard begins. They lose track of the dogs, and Billy's grandfather falls and badly sprains his ankle. They stop and build a fire as day begins to break. Soon enough, they find the dogs, covered with ice. They have gotten just enough coons to win. Everyone at the tournament cheers. Billy has also won a jackpot of 300 dollars.

Billy's mama and sisters are overjoyed. Billy keeps up his hunting. One night, however, his dogs tree a mountain lion. Old Dan howls defiantly, and the big cat attacks. Billy is horrified, and with his axe he enters the fray, hoping to save his dogs, but they end up having to save him. Eventually, the dogs defeat the mountain lion, but Old Dan is badly wounded. He dies the next day. Billy is heartbroken, but Little Ann is so sad that she loses her will to live, and dies a few days later. Billy's papa tries to tell him that it is all for the best, because with the money Billy has earned, the family hopes to move to town. Billy does not completely recover until on the day of the move; he goes to visit the dogs' graves and finds a giant red fern. According to Indian legend, only an angel can plant a red fern. Billy and his family look at the fern in awe, and he feels ready to leave for the town.

Boston Fern Problem.......?

Hi, i have a Boston Fern, which i've noticed just lately is covered in these black flys, well i think there flys, they've attached them selfs to quite a few of the leaves. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this problem. Thanx in advance :)

Boston Fern Problem.......?
Might not be flies, ferns have their spores/seed on the reverse side of the leaf, look like little black dots

http://amerfernsoc.org/s
Reply:If they are on the underside of the leaves, they are probably spores which are natural.

If they are on the top side and on the stems and axis, it may be scale. You need to get rid of that with a good miticide.

4) Anthoceros punctatus. (horn wort)--Anthoceros is a genus of hornworts in the family Anthocerotaceae. The genus is global in its distribution. Its name means 'flower horn', and refers to the characteristic horn-shaped sporophytes that all hornworts produce. The dark color of the spores is the easiest way to distinguish Anthoceros from the related genus Phaeoceros, which produces spores that are yellow.

Question from the book: "where the red fern grows"?

How are billy's dogs unusual?

Question from the book: "where the red fern grows"?
Where the Red Fern Grows has two main themes: determination and man's relationship to dogs. The two are closely related. After all, Old Dan, a dog, is perhaps the most determined character in the novel. Billy earns his beloved dogs through his determination, and together, they are unstoppable; they are a trio of dedication. Billy distinguishes between Old Dan and Little Ann, deciding that Old Dan is brave (that is, determined) while Little Ann is smart. But what does Little Ann's intelligence entail? It means that she always keeps searching for a coon. It means that she doesn't bark "treed" until she has done as thorough a search as possible, and is sure that the coon is in the tree. She is smart because she doesn't give up too early.
Reply:They came mail order.
Reply:i read the book and grew up where it was based on in oklahoma . there was nothing unusual about the dogs they where just hound dogs its a good story but i really cant come up with one for that
Reply:lol dont u read? They always follow each other and when the boy dog dies, the girl dog felt there was not strength to live
Reply:Well, partially due to their very close relationship with each other. I've heard of a lot of dogs being loyal to their people, but not usually of a dog who would refuse to eat until his little sister began. Also, though I suppose it's possible, most dogs don't whither away and die after a fellow dog dies. It's highly debatable just how emotional dogs can be, I know, but I don't often observe that deep mourning depression that would lead to death by broken heart.

(very good book btw. Sad, but good)

Tree fern help?

hi i have a tree fern (do not know what kind) but i got the little trunk thing from a very very cold place and now it is comming to a very warm place the tempreture can get up to 40 degrees celcius in summer and can get as low as 3 degrees celcius in winter and i really love tree ferns and i want to know what can i do to make it grow like should i put it in a shady area or keep it inside in summer please help

Tree fern help?
I lived in an area that got to mid 30's in summer, and my tree fern was very happy on the south side of my house, where I had built an uncovered fernery. Under trees where it can get shade from the midday sun would be good, or build a fernery with shade cloth. Give it plently of water during the summer months - water from where the branches stem from not at the base.

I resently was cleaning my aspargus fern and got pricked, now my finger is infected and green under the skin?

Go to your doctor. It probably needs to be lanced and an anti-biotic applied or perhaps even an oral anti-biotic.

I resently was cleaning my aspargus fern and got pricked, now my finger is infected and green under the skin?
First of a ll it's doubtful that you pricked your finger with an asparagus fern. They are not by any means stiff enough. They are very delicate, soft plants. However, if you somehow managed to do this, I would ge to the doctor or emergency room to have it looked at right away. In the interim, if you have an aloe plant, break off part of a stem and rub it on tje sore. If nothing else it will soothe it and possibly heal it.
Reply:Go to your doctor. You don't want to turn into the Incredible Hulk or anything.
Reply:You might try "epsom salts"--sold over the counter at drug stores. The directions will be on the container. If not this--go to a doctor.

My staghorn fern is dying!! Please help!!!!?

I bought a healthy young staghorn fern a while back, and not knowing about the proper care of them, overwatered it to the point where the shield fronds turned brown and started rotting. Once I figured out what the problem was, I stopped watering it so much, and transplanted it in a mesh hanging basket with moss and hung it outside. It stopped deteriorating, but it is not growing at all either. It's just been hanging there in sort of a 'suspended animation', not dying, but not making any improvement. I would appreciated any advise you can give me!!!!! Thanks in advance for your help!

I have staghorn fern that I need instructions for care. I would like to pot it, is that possible? Thanks Janic
Staghorn ferns are epiphytes ("air" plants) like orchids; they derive most of their nutrition from the air. In the wild, they attach themselves to trees for support, but they do not live off the tree and are not parasites. I have seen them attached to boards with a bit of sphagnum moss to hold water; I've also seen them placed in wire hanging baskets lined with sphagnum moss, which is probably the closest you'll be able to come to traditional potting.
Reply:i have never had any sugsess with staghorn ferns, but had several die. i eouldbe intrested in knoowing hoe myself
Reply:Yes, putting in a pot with sphagnum moss instead of on a piece of bark, or even with a piece of bark underneath it, should work. Spray it often - they need high humidity. Put plant food and water in the little "pocket" between the fern and where the bark would be. Good luck.
Reply:Lots of good answers here. If it has to be potted, again, no soil, just moss and keep slightly damp.

If you're not married to the idea of potting, you might consider that this fern's natural growth habit is to hang from branches, or the V of a branch and trunk. They do really well in a vertical planting where their foliage does not lie against the damp medium.
Reply:Staghorn ferns are air plants. You can pot them, but don't use dirt - just peat moss.

Fern Problem?

I've got a fern in my bedroom and on the new leaves growing there is some insects, i keep removing them but still they come back, I've washed it but still, I've you got any idea how to get rid of them?

Thanks

PS: The plant never goes outside so I dont know how the insects appeared

Fern Problem?
Sounds like flea bettles.
Reply:I wonder, could they be black-fly? Although you have removed them, its possibly their young that the plant is being re-infested with again. I would therefore try getting rid of them by applying an insecticide and then in one/two weeks time apply another dose of insecticide. The numbers should be reduced and then in another one/two weeks apply another dose again.

And try not to overwhelm the plant by over saturating it. Sometimes I get a little too enthusiastic!

A lot of these insecticides require several attempts to clear these problems as the young in the eggs can be impenetrable. In addition, if you can, do try to use a more environmentally friendly insecticide. We're getting fewer and fewer choices in the shops in the UK.
Reply:it would help to know what the insects look like. Whiteflies are tiny white flies that swarm when you touch the plant. Scale looks like tiny brown scales on the backs of the leaves (which, incidentally, is what fern spores look like, and they are supposed to be there, that is the seed of the fern, but you can tell the difference because the spores are in nice regular rows. Aphids are tiny probably green bugs. Mealy bug looks like bits of cotton fluff. Not knowing what the bugs are, it isn't easy to suggest a cure, but one thing you don't want to do is to spray them with insecticide because ferns can't tolerate that. I would , just in case they are soil gnats or hiding in the soil, take the plant out of the soil, wash it off thoroughly with cool water, and then put some Safer insecticidal soap or a dishwashing detergent like Ivory liquid in a bucket, and swish the plant in it. Then I would rinse it off and repot it in new soil. If that doesn't cure the problem, I would say toss it and get a new one, lol!

Fern dying?

I've had a 14" dia. indoor fern plant for about a year now. It did really well for about 6 months, %26amp; since then it's been dying off by the outer fronds, yet the center of the plant continues to sprout new growth...but the new growth eventually dies off too! Whats happening %26amp; how do I fix it?

-I water daily/bi-daily %26amp; 1 monthly with Miracle Grow

-It's in partial/filtered sun for most of the day

Fern dying?
The soil contents must be very weak. Usually you should change/add new soil every year. It may require fertilizers, usually you add organic fertilizer every 1.5-2 months. The best idea to save the fern at this moment is that you change the soil and add inorganic fertilizer to revive the plant quickly - later you can start using organic fertilizer.

Also, take care how much water you put in - Donot soak-wet the plant everyday - it may kill the plant.
Reply:move it to a new pot(bigger) and add some new soil! u can also take the plant out of it's pot and trim some roots which will rejuvenate the whole plant!

Christmas fern(PLEASE ANSWER!)?

I have a little project in Science, and I need to know if a Christmas fern is an autotroph or a heterotroph before I can continue with my research. Thank you so much and I really love that you took the time to read this.

Christmas fern(PLEASE ANSWER!)?
autotrophs make their own food. Plants are autotrophs, as they make their own food through photosynthesis. (Photoautotrophs)

Heterotrophs have to eat autotrophs for their food, because they can't produce their own food out of inorganic materials. People and animals, fungi, and bacteria are heterotrophs, because they take in other autotrophs (or heterotrophs) for food.

When is the best time to repot boston ferns?

I live in South Carolina, and was wondering when is the best time to repot a boston fern. For the past week or so we have had heat index of 105 to 120 degrees. I moved my ferns to the back of the house to get morning sun instead of the evening however some of the leaves did turn brown but the fern is ok but I have some roots coming out of the bottom of the pot should i consider repotting ? If so what is the best potting soil to use? Should i break the plant apart to make more plants? This is the very first year i have been able to keep a fern without killing it therefore I'm proud of my ferns. So any advice on the winter care and transplanting would be great. thank you

When is the best time to repot boston ferns?
Repot when they have overgrown the pot.

Since your ferns "have some roots coming out of the bottom of the pot" ... they definately need to be placed in a bigger pot!

Since ferns prefer potting soil with good drainage and high organic content, use a soil-less potting mix containing peat moss for potting ferns.

The foliage will burn if put into direct sunlight... indirect or filtered light is the best light. Ferns need a north-facing window. South or west-facing windows are to be avoided, unless they are curtained.

Put your pots on a tray containing pebbles and a small amount of water to raise the humidity around your ferns, %26amp; don't let the bottom of the pot touch the water in the tray. "A pot that constantly sits in water will encourage fungus diseases and root rot. Misting on a regular basis will help increase humidity. Ferns that need especially high humidity can be grown in bathrooms and terrariums. Browning or die back on the tips of the fronds is evidence of low humidity. While most ferns enjoy a moist atmosphere some varieties like to dry out slightly between watering. Rabbit's Foot Fern, Brake Ferns and Holly fern should not be watered until the surface of the soil is dry. Most ferns do well in average room temperature--68 to 72."

http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/sheets/...

If the roots are entangled, then separate them %26amp; put into different pots.

Good luck! Hope this helps.
Reply:Thanks to the persons who voted on this %26amp; untied it from 8 months ago. Report It
Reply:I usually do it when I have time, first I dump one out of the pot and take a hachet or machete and chop in four sections and then replant in four pots, keep moist and they do very well.
Reply:I would say the best time to repot boston ferns is when the buyer has failed to make payment after 30 days. If you are afraid to do it yourself, you could hire a repot man.

How many hours a day of light do ferns need?

I have moved my fern inside to a bathroom with no window. How many hours a day do I need to keep the light on in there?

How many hours a day of light do ferns need?
It varies depending on the type of fern but the shade tolerant ones need at least 3-4 hours a day. If the bathroom lights are 5 or 6 feet from the plant you may want to keep the lights on for 5-6 hours. As the distance from the light source increases the usable light decreases quit a bit.
Reply:I grow plants under flourescent lights (3 4-bulb units) and I keep the lights on 14 hours/day. If you have boston fern, they really do take a lot of light, an asparagus fern requires even more.

How do fern and mold increase in number?

Essentailly they both reproduce in the same way, using spores, but the mechanics are very different.

Ferns are seedless vascular plants and members of the phyllm Pteridophyta. They differ from seed plants by the way they produce, in that they produce no flowers or seeds.

The typical life cycle of a fern is:

1. A sporophyte phase which produces the spores

2. A spore grows by cell division into a gametophyte.

3. The gametophyte produces gametes (often both sperm and eggs on the same prothallus) by mitosis.

4. A mobile, flagellate sperm fertilizes an egg that remains attached to the prothallus

5. The fertilized egg is now a diploid zygote and grows by mitosis into a sporophyte (the typical "fern" plant).

Mould is a generic term that include all species of microscopic fungi that grow in the form of multicellular filaments, called hyphae. There are 1000's of known species. Mould like all fungi get there energy from the organic matter on which they live, not by photosynthesis.

A connected network of these tubular branching hyphae has the same DNA and is considered a single organism, referred to as a colony or in more technical terms a mycelium.

Molds reproduce through small spores. Mold spores can be asexual (the products of mitosis) or sexual (the products of meiosis), and many species can produce both types. They may contain a single nucleus or many. Some can remain airborne indefinitely, and many are able to survive extremes of temperature and pressure.

How do fern and mold increase in number?
It's all about the spores - talk to the mushrooms - they'll back me up

How to cook FIddle Head ferns?

I've never had them before, but I've promised myself that I will continue to try new foods whenever I have a chance, so it's Fiddlehead fern time!!

Does anyone have a recipe they would recommend? It needs to be vegetarian freindly as the other person eating them is vegetarian!

Thanks!

How to cook FIddle Head ferns?
I love fiddleheads - and sadly they have a very short season and are not so easy to find where I live! I just simmer about 2 cups of them in an inch of water or so, in a covered pan. Drain, and set aside. Saute a bit of garlic in some olive oil (or a bit of butter, if you prefer), until the garlic is softened. (about 5 minutes). Add your steamed fiddleheads and toss - add a bit of fresh black pepper and salt and cook for just another 2 to 3 minutes...they are delicious!
Reply:CAUTION: You CANNOT eat unfurled fiddle heads. You can the curled fiddle heads and you can eat them raw or cooked but do not eat too many raw. The thiaminase enzyme attackes Vitamin B1 when eating the fiddles in large quantities. Cooking destroys that enzyme.

Experiment with the cooking. Boil them for starters.
Reply:Oh you are so lucky, they are soooo good. I lived in Vermont and used to get them every year.

Take your ferns and wash them good....Take a skillet melt real butter and add garlic.....then slowly sautee them in it...till they soften up a bit, but dont let them go mushy.....

This recipe is too good for words..

What watt lightbulbs do you need for a 55 gallon with java moss and java fern fishtank?

The minimum amount I would suggest would be about 160-170 watts, or 3 watts per gallon. A 55 is a bit deep and needs a bit of strong light even for low light plants.

MM

What watt lightbulbs do you need for a 55 gallon with java moss and java fern fishtank?
if you have incandescent lighting on your aquarium then you would need about 110 watts -- about 2 watts per gallon is the rule for low/medium light. jack that up to 3 watts per gallon and you can grow a forest.

if you have fluorescents don't worry about the wattage so much -- worry about the kelvins. i would assume you have a 40 watt fluorescent fixture so just keep that -- you can't change out wattage on a fluorescent. flluorescents do have a "color heat" number measured in kelvins. without getting too technical standard wattage is based on white light -- it admits a broad spectrum of colors. you can tweek and maximize your fluorescents by going with ones that emit a lot of blues and some reds. most of the higher kelvins (about 7500k - 1000k) will be labeled for growing plants. the one that came with your hood is probably about 4500 so be ready to be impressed when you change it out.
Reply:go for the coralife t-5 lights best bang for your buck!
Reply:Both are low light plants, i'd do two 2' plantglo lights,

What were the contirbuting factors to the decline of the great ferns covering earth millions of years ago.?

Millions of years ago this planets plant life was dominaed by Ferns and fern like trees. This dominance continued for a long time, but eventually the ferns began to die off in favor of different plant life.

Climate change is clearly one reason but what other factors caused the fern to be less competitive than new plant life and trees and lose its place in dominance?

What were the contirbuting factors to the decline of the great ferns covering earth millions of years ago.?
probably more aggressive species of plants, such as shrubs, bushes and other hard wood plants like trees. They are adaptive to changes in temperature and are not as easily damaged by storms.

it is also quite possible that grazing animals found the soft fern delectable and easy to digest and sought them out.

or you could always blame illegal fern loggers. :)
Reply:the sun. as other plants grew to be big, the ferns source of food was blocked out. as a result the fern population grew smaller as other plants dominated. hope this helps

Fern question, zone 7?

If ferns reproduce from spores, why is weather and frost so important? I'd like to plan some Boston Ferns and Asparagus Ferns outdoors, but we get cold in the winter. Anyone know what ferns would survive a zone 7 winter?

Fern question, zone 7?
Actually ferns will survive in cold weather. They go dormant.

Fern plants are listed below. We carry a large selection of ferns.

Zone : 7

Christmas

Cinnamon

Royal

There is also one called a Southern Wood Fern.

*************************************

http://www.naturehills.com/catalog/Ferns...

You can also dig up wild ferns and plant them.

Just make sure the directions and conditions are correct for any type of fern.

Reply:neither one of those will. There a tons that do though. Go to a local nursery and they can direct you to them. Some of my favs are Autumn Fern and Japanese Painted Fern. These are amazing.

Be careful, some ferns are weedy and will become a pest. Ostrich fern comes to mind.

Are there ferns that would do well in 5 hours of sunlight in hot summer?

I am wanting to plant some ferns in a hedge, but the extended area where I would like to have this hedge crosses into an area which receives as much as 5-6 hours of sunlight. I live in Tennessee and it gets quite hot too in the summer , but I really like the looks of the fern and would like to plant it anyways.

How would it do and which cultivars of Fern would do okay still?

Thanks for your answers!

Are there ferns that would do well in 5 hours of sunlight in hot summer?
Thelypteris kunthii (Southern Shield Fern) %26amp; Dryopteris ludoviciana, or Florida Shield Fern are sun-loving ferns:

Both Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) and Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides ) will tolerate full sun if well watered. The Christmas Fern plant can tolerate more sun than most other ferns if it is provided with adequate soil moisture.

Lady Ferns (Athyrium filix-femina) tolerate full sun in the North in a damp site. For the best results, plant in soil well supplied with organic matter, that doesn't dry out.

http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/growing-a...

The southern lady fern is supremely adapted to a wide range of sun and soil characters. They can be quite drought tolerant, after they are established. These plants will grow in both full sun to total shade, but will require more water, and a more organic soil in the sun.

http://www.arhomeandgarden.org/landscapi...

Royal Osmunda regalis Royal ferns grow from a central rhizome, are deciduous, can be 3-5 feet tall and are hardy in Zone 3. They have upright, branching, arching fronds and send up a fertile blade. They will grow in sun to shade. They prefer very acid humus soils that stay moist to boggy.

Sensitive Onoclea sensibilis Sensitive ferns have creeping rhizomes, are deciduous, grow 1-2 feet tall and are hardy to Zone 3. The fronds are upright and horizontally arching. Sensitive ferns will grow in sun to shade. They prefer acid humus soil that stays moist to boggy. Easy to grow.

Here's some photos of "Cloak Ferns" and "Sun Ferns" -- unlike most (shade-requiring) ferns, they grow in the open in full sunlight, and have adaptively thickened cuticle tissues for protection. Biologist Jordan Metzgar says that the Cloak or Sun Ferns shown below are now classed in the Genus Astrolepis:

Reply:You're welcome! I did a lot of digging on this one. Good question. It really was a fascinating topic. Report It
Reply:No.
Reply:Fearne Cotton.
Reply:Are you planting it as a hedge or within a hedge?

Foxtail asparagus fern-not an actual fern but very heat and sun loving plant with fern-like foliage, it needs protection from winter freezing.

Kimberly fern is also tender but is an actual fern and can handle more sun than most other ferns.

Depending on what time of the day the sun is hitting the area you may be able to use Cinnamon fern.

Some other plants with fern-y foliage you might investigate: Yarrow, Bronze fennel and Amsonia.

Sensitive and royal fern may go dormant in the heat of Tennessee's summers

Good luck , edit if you need more info, I'll add.

Would java fern or moss ?

I have a 2 1/2 gallon tank for my betta. right now i have little gravel and a big silk plant and a small deco. in tank. Would Either Java moss or java fern work in the tank. The tank don't have really good lighting. And if i put really plants in such a small tank. which i clean ever 3rd day or so. Are real plants the way to go or should i stay with slilk???

Would java fern or moss ?
Java moss is a good plant to keep in with bettas. It doesn't need very much light - place the tank in any room that has access to natural sunlight and it should be fine. It's easy to grow on driftwood, floating corks or various different ornaments - just tie it down with some fishing line, leave it for a week and it will root itself down in no time. Alternatively, you can leave it floating, which is fine as well. If you do that, you should spread it out a little, so that all of it can get access to sunlight.

I have not had much experience with java ferns, but I would say that java moss gets my vote because it's the neatest - meaning it doesn't require gravel. I don't like having gravel in my tanks because it makes them harder to clean and the water gets a little cloudy. So personally, I prefer moss.

Putting live plants in a 2.5 gallon tank should be fine. It actually helps make the water slightly cleaner. After putting java moss into my betta tanks I added one day to their cleaning schedule, that is, instead of cleaning their tanks every 5 days I now clean them every 6 days.
Reply:I would add my vote for Java Moss. It's hardy and low light tolerant. Basically, it's difficult to kill the stuff unless you try.

MM
Reply:I would choose java moss because it's the only one I know about of the two. In a short time, it will cover the whole aquarium bottom and doesn't require much light.
Reply:I hate java moss. It's great stuff, but if your water pH is not perfect it just turns brown and dies. Java ferns are easy to keep and require low lighting. Have you ever considered anubius plants? There are a ton of varieties and they are very slow growing. They cost about as much as a good bunch of java fern, but in my opinion it's much easier to grow. I prefer anubius coffeefolia, but there are many varieties. They can also grow above the water line so you could let it grow out of your tank. They are technically a terrarium plant, but they grow so slowly that they don't even notice that they are fully submerged. I've had the same plant for years. Good luck.
Reply:I agree with azo java moss will work good all you need is a little clump because it will spread you will have to prone now and then but it doesent need much light at all and its proven to improve water quality scientist have proven java moss lowers ammonia and nityrits so with that a 24% change once a week is all youl need cheack out www.plantgeek.com

Can i take the following all at the same time: fern-c, powerjoints, mucosulvan 75g and anlene milk?

My answer would depend on why U shld take all of them at the same time. Fern C and mucosolvan cld be taken together for respiratory problems like a cough if U are suffering from one. Powerjoints and anlene if U got arthritis. To be safe, U better take them few minutes apart so as to prevent interaction of the ingredients. Interaction may potentiate or lessen the effects of substances U take.

By the way, to treat arthritis or osteoporosis, avoid much calcium or hi-calcium milk. There are studies that show that high calcium intake without the corresponding intake of magnesium in their proper ratio will worsen the development of the problem. Check by surfing on the topic : Benefits of magnesium and U will see why high calcium intake causes more osteoporosis and worsens arthritis.

I dont live by any pagan shops so where can i get wicca ingredients like Fern leaf, rosemary ect?
Some of the herbs you mentioned can be purchased at your local grocery store. For the others try your local herb shop or the internet.
Reply:Prairie has a good idea - go to witchvox.com.. they have a section under "shops" for online and local purchases... depending on where you live (like me.. I live in "the bible belt") such shops are few and far between - and they may not advertise. I grow most of my own herbs - something you can do, even if you live in the city - all you need is a sunny window and some clay pots. But, if you can't wait, try eBay or a couple I've put below (they're my favorites, but I'm sure there are a plethora of great shops I haven't discovered yet).

Some herbs/materials are a little pricey, such as a braid of sweetgrass, but you'll find most are pretty cheap. And, others are correct about finding some in your local grocery store.

You might even look under the online yellowpages in your area for metaphysical shops. Good luck, and happy shopping!
Reply:You don't have to go to Pagan shops for those things. Just look for farmers markets or specialty super markets like whole foods. Do an internet search of specialty shops in your area...you would be surprised what there is.

From one pagan to another...lol
Reply:The grocery has many herbs to use for Wicca.

If you can't find what you need, visit www.azuregreen.com

the web's oldest online store for WitchCraft needs.
Reply:Online stores usually have some pretty good stuff. Try this one, I have ordered from them before and got some good herbs. They have a large selection.
Reply:Many of those things are available on line.
Reply:a vegetable garden
Reply:try to find a natural health food store by you to find these ingredients
Reply:Most of that stuff you can get at the grocery store or craft store. For the rest, try paganshopping.com
Reply:You could also try a search on eBay, although of course it's best to deal with a reputable supplier.

Herbs can generally be bought from any store that sells them -- they don't have to be "special" Wiccan herbs in order to work. The Dollar Store (or its equivalent) in your area can be a terrific source for spell components and ritual supplies.

Have you checked the Witches of the World section on Witchvox to make sure there are no stores in your area?

http://www.witchvox.com/xvn.html

Just use the pull-down menus on the left to find individuals, groups, shops, and events in your area.

Good luck in your search! :-)
Reply:If you type WICCA in your search engine you will have several links of which several will list outlet stores by location or nearest to you.

You will also find links that offer online purchasing.
Reply:i'd say you could go to wal-mart. this is where I get most of my ritual supplies They don’t have to be named wiccan by a label. You can use dollar store candles and they are still candles, but your talking about herbs, same rule applies. Might I suggest that you try to grow them? I have never done this. I am thinking of starting a garden this summer though. I live in a rural area and there are NO occult shops of any sort around here. I think the nearest one is about 150 miles away. It is possible to make due with what you have around you. I do it, you can too!

Anyone know which types of plant cells are found in each plant category (monocot,conifer,fern,moss,dic...

There are three major plant cell types: parenchyma cells, collenchyma cells, and sclerenchyma cells. Are certain ones specific to certain categories? HELP!

Anyone know which types of plant cells are found in each plant category (monocot,conifer,fern,moss,dic...
Parenchyma are universal in plant kingdom.

Collechyma are found most ly in dicots ( but not in the roots )

Sclerenchyma are also universal except mosses .

Xylem tracheids are only in gymnosperms and and ferns

Like wise sieve cells are also restricted to those two types .

Xylem vessels are found in dicot and monocot ( Angiosperms only ) .

Likewise sieve tubes and companion cells are in Angiosperms only .

Is a lady fern a Gymnosperm or an angiosperm?

title

Is a lady fern a Gymnosperm or an angiosperm?
gymnosperm because angiosperm is a flowering plant that has fruit
Reply:Gymnosperm
Reply:It is a gymnosperm
Reply:Ferns are neither. Gymnosperms are seed plants that don't make flowers... they're coniferous plants like pines and spruces.

Ferns are an entirely different type of plant. They have a different kind of life cycle. They make spores that grow a smaller plant, called a gametophyte. The gametophyte produces gametes (sperm and eggs) that make the sporophyte, which is what you typically call a fern.

When do tree ferns start growing in the UK?

I bought a tree fern (dickensia) last year, its been in a pot in the garden all winter. I covered the crown with bubble wrap and cut off the old fronds.

When can I expect it to start sprouting? It looks decidedly dead at the moment. I live in the south of england but we have had some cold nights, down to -8c or so, IM worried it might be dead.

When do tree ferns start growing in the UK?
Instead of using bubble wrap use either fleece/frost cloth, or old-fashioned sacking, close in the square and fasten the protection with tacks or the thin staples similar to those you'd use to fasten two pieces of paper together but a bit sturdier. It has to stand up to any windy spells over the winter because you have had cold nights under over -5 that's the maximal coldness they can take . If yours is in a pot.also they prefer to go in the shade so if you have some shade in your garden it will do better there.

* regular watering (everyday especially in warmer days)

*Also need to be feed (Maxi Crop are good )

*winter put a wedge of straw down the centre of the plant (where the fronds grow from) to keep the worst of the frost out.

Hope it helps

Dryopteris blandfordia fern Has any one seen or Know of another,NAME of this plant?????

Blandfordiaceae is the botanical name of a family of flowering plants. Such a family has not been recognized by many taxonomists.

The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, of 1998), does recognize this family and places it in the order Asparagales, in the clade monocots. The family then includes only a single genus (Blandfordia) of four species in Eastern Australia.

Will Fern Brittain, lower her voice into understanding tone tomorrow morning?

and explain to the nation why she told us that her weight loss was down to healthy living/eating, and not that her stomach had been medically banded. Will she also admit to a possible breast reduction and that she wears lycra underwear to keep everything under control....?

Will Fern Brittain, lower her voice into understanding tone tomorrow morning?
i knew it was a gastric band she looks haggard to me

i think fern is good at playing nice and fooling people if she breaks into one more fit of fake giggles once more i will scream . it was sweet when it was genuine
Reply:I don't know what all of the fuss is about, at the end of the day Fern would still need to eat healthily for the gastric band to work, so she isn't lying, I have seen stories of people who have a gastric band fitted but carry on eating high calorie food but can't lose weight, also nobody could accuse her of not excercising, what about those charity bike rides she does? If thats not excercise, then I don't know what is!

I think she lots great, and so what if she does wear lycra underwear? Whose business is that????
Reply:I absolutely love Fern but i cant help but to feel a tad disappointed in what she has done. She deceived the general public, the fat general public at that , she was an inspiration to me and other fatties !! I thought if she can do it so can i !! But alas i cant do it , i lack the funds for a stomach band :(

Still love her but she just should have said when she had it done , gawd knows lots of us fat burds would if we had the funds... Back to the diet and exercises i guess :)
Reply:Why do we think we have the right to know anyway?Did she ever actually deny having a band? I have had one for 3 months now and trust me you do need to eat healthily and watch what you eat or it's all coming back up...at twice the speed it went down!!!! It's not an easy option as anyone whos got one will tell you. It's a very personal matter with lots of ups and downs and she chose to keep it to herself.....whats the problem???

damn id like to know too lol

Name a similarity and difference between fern and mushroom.?

Similarity: Both ferns and mushrooms reproduce sexually by means of spores (as opposed to seeds).

Difference: Ferns are photosynthetic and are therefore primary producers. Mushrooms are not photosynthetic, and feed on organic compounds that have been produced by other organisms.

Fern plant......its gone all dry and dead looking.?

ive repotted it. its been watered ok, its just looking really unhealthy. what can i do to save it ?????

Fern plant......its gone all dry and dead looking.?
Keep it shaded and moist, all ferns die back and look like this, but sunburn can also make them withered.

I carefully remove he dead leaves from my ferns every year with some bonsai scissors and place them around the base of the plant to provide habitat for insects.

You should have some new fonds sprouting now though, if not give it few weeks in the moist shade or in an out house in the dark, if it doesn't recover in 3-4weeks, on to the compost heap and get a new one.

Check at you garden centre when you buy them to see which one suits your garden the best.

They will burn very quickly in the open sun, plant them under trees and larger shrubs and bushes, or somewhere where the direct sun will not hit the leaves.

Bracken is a more hardy plant and can be planted in open sun, but they can get a bit big, they thrive in open woodland, but if your garden is large enough there is no reason why you can have a bracken too, they will shelter the smaller ferns.

I have 7 ferns in the garden and 2 always look more battered than the others because of their position. They recover when my trees start to provide more shelter with their leaves.

I just give the extra water while they wait.

Planting them in the ground is better if you can.

Gaia can work her magic on them better. She is the best gardener of them all.
Reply:i'm going to assume this is a boston fern because you haven't named it and it's the most available...anyway, my experience is that they are mostly hung from the ceiling. if your air vents are blowing on the plant the air will dry them out. move the fern to a place where it's not in the airstream or over a heat source and water normally.
Reply:is it in the sun or shade? and have u tried fertalizing it? if u havnt tried fertalizing it, then do so. if u have tried, then jst move in the sun unless its in the sun, then move it in the shade.

Its pretty easy:

Billy Colman - The protagonist of Where the Red Fern Grows. At the start of the novel he is ten years old. He has three younger sisters. He is filled with "puppy love"--he wants a dog badly. He is a brave boy, full of determination and grit.

Old Dan - Old Dan is one of Billy's red bone coonhounds. He is bigger and stronger than Little Ann, the other hound. He will never leave a raccoon once he is on its trail, although sometimes his impatience gets the best of him, and he loses the trail.

Little Ann - Little Ann is one of Billy's red bone coonhounds. She is smaller but smarter than Old Dan. She is a beautiful hound, and will not stop hunting until she knows exactly where the coon is hiding. No coon can trick her. For a hound, she is extremely playful.

Papa - Billy's papa is a good, honest farmer. He is poor, but is working hard so his family can move to the city. Once Billy buys his hounds, he starts to treat Billy like a man.

Grandfather - Billy's grandfather runs a general store and a small mill. His store is a place where coon hunters gather to talk about hunting. He is full of imagination, and gets Billy into a lot of adventures.

Mama - Billy's mama is part Cherokee. She is very religious and always enjoys answering Billy's questions about God. She worries about him when he is hunting, but is also very proud of him. She wants very much to move to town so the children can get a good education.

Billy's Sisters - Billy has three sisters, all younger than him. They help with chores, but are often too little to understand what is going on.

Ruben Pritchard - Ruben is the older of the two Pritchard brothers. They come from a strange, disliked family. Ruben is full of insults and ready to fight. While on a hunt with Billy and Rainie, he falls on an axe and dies.

Rainie Pritchard - Rainie is the younger of the two Pritchard brothers. They come from a strange, disliked family. Rainie is not very bright, but he is full of tricks and is always trying to make bets.
